Kurai walked down the streets of Iwagakure, taking in the fortress of a village. He could never get over the steadiness that the village hidden in the stone exemplified. Just being within the walls instilled in him a certain strength, a certain drive. It was likely there was nothing he couldn't do. No obstacle he couldn't overcome, not one. His usual leather outfit, wrapped around him loosely. This particular set was designed especially for him by his father. The skilled tailor incorporated a unique cool lining that kept his body at a comfortable temperature. He couldn't believe the serene filling. As his body glided through his neighborhood, on auto-pilot he greeted the smiling faces that met the teenage boy. Despite his rapport with his villagers, most were unaware that he was an Uchiha. It was likely due to the fact that kurai never once activated his Sharingan, the staple of the clan. The prowess of the ocular power that dwelt inside him left the poet staggering for the right act of expression. Was it his calling to somehow ignite that power, that inextinguishable fire within him, the charcter associated with most Uchiha... absolutely not. Kurai didn't seek to resemble his mystery Uchiha counterparts, or any counterparts in any form. His calling would be his own. His tool for building his platform would be his own. The voice that would echo over the nations will be one that will create harmonious chords that human ears have been so deprived never too have heard before. The day, in the spring, when Kurai's true ambition blossomed it will set ablaze a fortuitous path for mankind... he would make sure of it.

The quite streets were no more, as he left the limits of the quiet county into the main district of the village. He crossed the small bridge that separated the two. As he sat forth on the downward slope leading into the city, he could almost feel the bustling. The vibration and the stiffness of being in a sporadic environment, it was exhilarating actually. He feet came to a stop as he thought of the best way to maneuver through... I need to get back to the gym, my last training session wasn't intense enough, I need more emotional content in my practice. Alright, there we go, the people look agitated, I'll have to steer----

"Hi Kurai!" The sound caught him off guard, he quickly located the person. The look on his face, the man that called out to him spoke with in an uneasy tone. The corners of his lips said one thing, but his eyes shifted worriedly. "Tao, nice to see you. What is wrong?" Tao's head fell, a chuckle escaped from his mouth. He seemed to be relieved that a lead up to his concerns weren't necessary, that much could be counted on when talking to Kurai. He was always eager to get to what mattered the most, but he could only get their by first taking in the minute details that would allow him such perception as to see into the purpose of a person. However, most people that Kurai dealt with, wanted him so see past their facades. It was a daily struggle masking emotions, and oppressing them. When Kurai was around, they didn't have to worry about such. They reveled in that freedom of expression, and a willing listener. Tao drew closer, and drew in deeper breaths as well. "To be honest Kurai, I don't know. Everyone is so tightly strung these days. Look at them, so much is pent up... " The snowy white hair Kurai gave a genuine smile. "Tao, they just need to let off some steam pal. Get everyone to the dojo. I don't care how you get them there, just make sure there is a good showing." Tao gave an uneasy smile as the urge to inquire on what Kurai had planned was almost unbearable. He fought it though, "Alright, I'm on it!" He sprinted off, excited to see just what Kurai was going to have waiting for the attendants. With a brush of his hands, swinging but a few lone strings of hair from his face, he walked to the gym.

Kurai continued to walk towards the gym. As he drew closer he realized the region was rather empty. “Just as I expected, not many are training. No wonder they’re on edge as I presumed earlier… Well, this is going better than I expected.” Before Kurai’s hand could grab hold of the knob, he could feel a herd of people stampeding in his direction. “Let us begin.” Kurai walked through. He already had on his fancy leather exercise attire. The fighting poet strolled to the area designated for sparring and took his position, waiting to speak to the multitude of people about fill the gymnasium. Kurai slipped on his kick gloves and threw a few shadow punches and kicks. “This will be a lot of fun” Flapping at his sides were his well defined arms that were on display as his shirt had no sleeves. Splinters of white hair bounced gracefully, intermittently rising just enough to reveal specs of his dark brooding eyes. He always took in this particular persona when training. One of the things Kurai held most dear was his shinobi development and his overall physical well-being. Training was never and would never be a joke to him.

The first person blew the gasket; as tens more followed right afterwards. They rushed in, apparently it became obvious to Tao and the others why they were called here… to the gym… it was for sparring. Everyone needed a good spar on occasion and these people knew it. Being swept up in the tornado of life had taken them away from one of the simplest cathartic practices. Kurai could read into the innermost working of a person’s desires. The Uchiha poet had experienced so much himself, talked to so many different people, seen so many different places, it had become second nature for him to be able to relate and understand… now he would relate through combat. It was now not a question of are the people relieving some tension, as they soon would be, but if they could keep up with the quick and adept Kurai. Above his speed and close combat striking prowess was his savvy, his keen awareness and intelligence in combat, his knack for extrapolation and exploitation. Efficiency was one of his more treasure combat mottos. In mere minutes, he would allow up to 5 combatants to test their mettle against the Keen Kurai. A few would stand, more would fall.

“Good afternoon comrades! I see Tao has excelled in relaying the message. I have asked you all here on such short notice to give you all the grand opportunity of letting off some steam. Most of you know me; therefore you know I enjoy training very much. So if a few would be so kind to assist me in my training by accompanying me in a spar that would be great. Also, I encourage everyone to find a partner as well to do some sparring too. I will likely take on multiple opponents, so… if you think you’re up to a challenge stick around and wait for each of my spars to finish. So… will be my first opponent?”

There was a lot of chatter going on amidst the crowd. Voices echoed off each other, clamoring their words, frantically trying to reach a conclusion… Who would face Kurai? The 16 year old shinobi was just a Genin. But he was only a Genin in “mission” experience, and jutsu repertoire… but everyone was eerily aware of the changing of that fact. Kurai could always be spotted training, and even more prevalent was his activity in adventure. Savvy was indeed on his side, as too was his keen analytical fancy. This alone gave him an edge over most before the heart of battle had a chance to pump. As the chatter reached a piano, a single shinobi stepped up. Confidence emanated from his core as his chest rose gallantly. From his stoic stance he projected his voice clearly and boomingly. “Anything goes?” Kurai brushed a few strands of his hair out of face and nodded, “Yes. Weapons, Ninjutsu, anything that will make the fight more challenging is permitted.” Kurai couldn’t hear his challenger’s reaction but it was obvious a muffled chuckle escaped his lips in delight of the new spar development. The particular sparring region they were in inside the gym was circular and 15 meters in radius. There were several other spots scattered in the gym, but most seemed to stay in their place as the challenger entered the ring. The spectators were itching to express themselves physically as well, but were seemingly in need of inspiration. Well, weren’t they lucky? Kurai was inspiration incarnate.

Kurai’s first challenger was bigger than him, not by much, but definitely had more muscle mass. His buzzed brown hair glistened from the perspiration from the walk leading up to the gym. It wouldn’t be noticeable but Kurai’s eyes were narrowed as he took in the information rapidly. “He is already sweating; his stamina must be absurdly poor. It all makes sense. His absurd confidence… he is used to finishing opponents off quickly, subsequently neglecting his cardio training. Based on that, not only will he not last long, but if his initial attempts fail, mentally he will likely be flustered leaving him all the more vulnerable.” There was a large magnitude of more information that Kurai had already absorbed, but for now those two key details would likely be enough for Kurai to dissect the challenger.

Starting Distance: 7 meters

The challenger extended his arms out front, and a medium mass of chakra was being focused. Kurai created two clones, while the white smoke concealed him shortly, he switched places. He was now on the right (challenger’s left) and the clones were 2 meters and 4 meters away from Kurai respectively. The outer clone and Kurai flanked to their respective side while the one in the center remained still. In that moment of hesitation the real Kurai created two shuriken made out doton and upon release attached a chakra string to them. A smile flashed on the challenger’s face as he saw the attack from his side vision. “Ha! Clone Jutsu, I know the real one now!” He leaped up 8 meters and over the shuriken and turned his body simultaneously aiming the chakra blast back at him. As the earth shuriken whizzed under the intended target, Kurai yanked on the chakra string bringing them up and on a crash course for the back of the arrogant challenger. Right before the blast was released the shuriken smacked into his back. They caused just enough pain and discomfort to make his pull up and send his chakra blast astray. Kurai would take advantage, as soon as the challenger landed on the gym floor, Kurai was already in front of him. A jaw breaking elbow came upward connecting with the opposition’s chin, effectively stunning him. Following up was an even more devastating blow. In the challenger’s stunned state, Kurai sent a short right hook to the challenger’s chest. A resounding blast was released from Kurai’s fist on contact, knocking the challenger back 3 meters. The defeated slid across the surface of the gym. The burn on his chest could be heard sizzling several meters away.

A person came to carry the loser away… “Thank you for participating. I hoped that was as good a workout for you as it was for me. Alright, who’s next?”

Kurai could nearly feel the energy from the spectators. It had been what they were craving. Now more than ever they just wanted to be in the heart of combat, placing their wits against another, for the thrill. One guy began jumping up and down and began to move forward until a hand landed on his shoulder. While that took place the rest of the crowd broke out into the other stations, they were now inspired and they wanted to feel their fist launch with intent to strike. A feeling was missing, a feeling of passion, a feeling of adventure. One pair had reserved a station as soon as Kurai’s literal explosive strike knocked his opponent out. They had unleashed a swarm of projectiles at each other. The clanging metal rang out beautiful melodies. Back to the overly excited guy who had been held back. Despite his blocked view of the constraint, he knew he was in store for a much different duel.  Initially, it had appeared the poet’s next opponent would be much like the first, brash. Something told Kurai that his upcoming challenger knew this, and took it upon himself to hold the guy back, knowing if he let him spar against Kurai, it would only be a playback of the previous match.

Stepping from behind, he finally revealed his person. A brown vest draped his torso, that was what the already victories Kurai’s eyes were drawn to first. Then his eyes rose, to see that he had slightly darker features than his own, and had his black hair tied back in a pony tail that reached just above the center of his back. From Kurai’s standpoint, the guy was nearly identical in physique (height and weight). The new challenger also wore baggy sweat pants that tightened at the knee, being replaced by black wrapping that ended at the ankle where his open toed sandals took over. Just off his demeanor he is much more composed, choosing to judge an opponent before opening himself up, which he has already done by watching my first match. He knows I’m capable of strategy, but he doesn’t know the extent. So he’ll likely prepare for the worst, leaving me little to no opening to begin with. In that case I’ll have no choice but to create some. That is all I can deduce at this point. He walked to the center, now only 5 meters away from Kurai. “My name is Shawn. I have heard a little of you… Han, Kurai. I look forward to this spar.” He then sank into his fighting stance. As a Taijutsu specialist, Kurai could spot other masters of the art, and this Shawn was one. Both men bowed and then the fight started.

Kurai recognized the style as Aikido, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t skilled in other forms. But for now, it was his best move to act under the pretense that his only sub specialty of Taijutsu was Aikido. The graceful martial art style of Aikido was one that focused on grappling and the transference of body weight, mostly relying on the opponents’ aggression or unbalance to achieve their respected moves and techniques. This is going to be even tougher than I expected. Kurai wouldn’t have too much to worry about in that department as he was a strict striker. Every blow was calculated and controlled; he doubted he would be suspect to any form of balance exploitation. Continuing on the not of Aikido, Kurai was also aware that he himself did not practice the art or any form concentrated in grappling, so there was a high probability that there was much more to Aikido, and that could prove to be the biggest pit fall of them all. After the bow and Shawn sat down in his stance, a mere 5 seconds passed before Kurai lunged forward with deceptive speed, closing the 5 meters quickly. Shawn, as Kurai expected prepared for a straight forward attack, but just as Kurai entered striking range he planted his foot and dashed laterally. The quick step to his right was coupled by a right hand chop that swung for the right side of Shawn’s chin. In the short time for planning, Kurai had mapped out this sequence of events. He feinted first, and then under pretense entered into a favorable situation for the opponent… The chop was fast, but not fast enough to overwhelm a Taijutsu specialist. The strike would fall right in the repertoire of a grappler The hand, the entire arm was there for the taking. Also, Shawn’s stance saw that his left foot was extended; therefore in Kurai quick step to his right, he would place himself in position for a trip. This would all happen so quickly and because of the initial feint of a straightforward attack, he was relying on Shawn taking the opportunity.

It was delicious. Kurai could taste Shawn’s instincts betraying him, and he knew that he knew it too. As soon as Shawn grabbed a hold of Kurai right arm and lifted his leg up and outward to execute the trip, he could see into his eyes that he fallen into a trap. First, Kurai would turn his arm drawing him in just a bit closer, and then used the momentum from the trip to give himself even more forward force. Then, as Kurai was in mid air, his body a diagonal line, he drove his left fist into the side of Shawn’s ribs with all the force that pulled him forward. The punch shook his grip loose, sent his staggering back and eventually taking a knee. With his hand now free, Kurai used his right hand to catch himself, upon his right foot landing, he would pivot forward. Out of the pivot he shot a short and swift left jab kick at the kneeling Shawn. The placement of the strike was flawless, connecting right on jaw, separating it. To cement the victory, Kurai dug his right knee into the center of his back, and pushed his left forearm against the back of his neck.

Kurai relieved the pressure. “If you were a step slower, and you timing and execution wasn’t so perfect, I would’ve been able to resist the trap. The moment I grabbed you… I knew it was over…” “I know, I saw the look in your eyes. Your stance and patience alone was an obstacle. I’m sure we’ll get the opportunity to test each other again and see more of each other’s skill” Kurai let the worthy challenger up and shook his hand. Shawn walked off. Almost everyone was now training with other people now… literally almost everyone, as there was only one person left. She stood with her hands on her hips wearing a face of satisfaction. She seemed to have liked what she had seen so far. Her feet only remained in their current spot for two reasons. One, she wanted to go out on date, finding Kurai’s fighting ability attractive. Or two, she wanted to let off some steam too. Kurai, a while ago, was a member of a squad that consisted of two other girls, so he would never underestimate a kunoichi for he had seen the equal potential female shinobi had to their male counterparts. A soft voice flowed from her seductive lips, “Do I dare come forward.”

Kurai hadn’t broken a sweat in his two matches, but this hadn’t even started and he could already feel the heat. In showman fashion he blew a puff of hair and tilted his head back a bit, “At your own risk.” Her hands melted off her hips as they swayed capturing Kurai’s welcoming gaze with each step. Her skin tight shorts stopped mid thigh under a short skirt. She wore an equally tight black t-shirt. The quiet steps, with each one drawing her closer his anticipation continue to rise. Despite her startling good looks, Kurai’s perception hadn’t waned. However, his high powered senses… left his fumbling. All he could deduce was that she was confident in her looks and perhaps had a knack for deception and manipulation. “But skills like that would likely not help her in a fight… the only way they could help… would be if she somehow tricked me into thinking she wants not to fight, and then in my moment of vulnerability she attacks. No, now I’m just being overly speculative. How about I let this one play out?” This was a true rarity, Kurai letting something play out. Even on his most bizarre adventures he takes in to account the tedious of details, which is why he is drawn to such ludicrous trips, because they are the only thing that can evade his analytical prowess.

“I must say, I am pleased with myself. Everyone seems a lot less stressed. How about you? Are you still tense?” Kurai had no other option; the only way he was going to get more information about this lovely girl was if he played with her a bit. The smallest of details could reveal so much. “A bit, but lunch always relaxes me. Not sparring.” A sliver of Kurai’s white teeth sparkled for a moment before being shrouded once more. “What do you have an appetite for?” The words oozed out with a touch of sensuality, intensified by Kurai’s forward motion towards the lady. Short slow steps he took, matching the girl’s advance. She couldn’t see them, but his eyes danced all over her, trying to pick up on the slightest hint of something that was worth taking notice of… other than the obvious, but as he saw more, it was becoming all that mattered. “Anything with you on the side.” Kurai’s expression didn’t change, he was tempted to let out a chuckle, but it was becoming more apparent that this was a spar of words. Who had the best quips? Kurai had so many comebacks it was almost painful to hold them in, but he had decided to end this now. He came to a stop. “I… am Kurai. Sorry to derail from our little word fencing match, but I’m here to train. I have one more spar in me, so if you want to have lunch I’ll be happy to join but you have to humor with a light spar. I really hope you accept because I would very much enjoy spending more time with you.”

Glowing softly was her face, “Well played. The only response to this situation was being direct. A game of cat mouse would have only led to you being put in an uncertain situation regardless. I’ll spar with you. That’s why I came. If you win… we can get lunch.” “Now I’m going to fight serious.” From the bottom left of his left he noticed subtle movement in her right hand, “I’m Cherry by the way”. Then just like that a Yari appeared in her hand. The straight spear was almost 2 meters long and Kurai was already within range. Her target was well chose as well, the torso. Given the speed and distance, it was too high for him to jump over and too low for him to duck. However, the downside to her using the full length was that Kurai wasn’t in danger of being struck by the tip of the yari, he was only going to get hit by the flexible staff portion. If she had pulled on the Yari giving it more damage potential, Kurai would have been able to easily skip backwards out of range. So this way, at least she was doing a little damage, but Kurai wasn’t worried about. Kurai dropped his left elbow and pulled it tight to his side, effectively dulling the strength of the strike.  Coupled with the block he also lowered and widened his stance. The leather bound shinobi didn’t budge. A smile flickered on Cherry’s face but Kurai wasn’t finished.

He grabbed the staff and lifted it up slipping his left hand on it as well, then with a fast and fluent motion he executed an arching motion whipping the Yari over head and off to the side. He then dashed forward while the Yari was out of the way but she would bring it sweeping right back. This time though Kurai anticipated it and extended his right hand using it as leverage to cartwheel over the staff. He landed in striking range. The Yari was a long range weapon so presumed to have a substantial advantage in close as the Yari would not be capable of being utilized to its fullest extent. Kurai shot a right cross, but in the midst of his strike Cherry stood her Yari up and shuffled it to the side blocking Kurai’s initial strike. Kurai then let off a barrage of punches and kicks. Cherry continue to shuffle her vertical Yari right, left, forward, diagonally, and at high speed and perfect coordination matching every punch, every kick. Then after her last block, she countered by flicking the bottom of the Yari snapping the back of Kurai’s calf. It inhibited his balance greatly. She went in for the kill. She extended the Yari to the side out of the way with her right hand, so she could deliver a powerful strike with her body. A powerful left side kick exploded for his chin in his off balanced state. Kurai was able to get his left forearm up to knock the foot away. This then threw her slightly off balance. Kurai then entered a 360 degree spin to her left, the side where her back was slightly facing now. His left foot rose off the ground first, and then his right leg came around, arching downward looking to connect with the side of Cherry’s head. A thud was heard as his foot connected. There was a cold stare in his eyes. The momentum of the kick swung her body around full circle, back facing Kurai, and as she whipped around she brought her Yari with her, but this time she was holding it near the center, so she was looking to hit Kurai with the flexible body, but the actual blade. Kurai had very little time, but he was able to release a very small portion of earth from his hands which he made about the size of a dinner plate. It shattered taking the brunt of the piercing attack leaving not even a scratch on Kurai.

The spar had reached a momentary stalemate. Kurai created a single kunai and dug it into the floor of the circular sparring area and then skipped back a few meters. The Yari vanished, poofing leaving behind a cloudd of white smoke and then Cherry leaped up to the rafter and began hurling spheres of wind right Kurai. Because of her vantage point, she was able to surround him completely. The only way Kurai could survive the attack was if he had a wide scaled defensive jutsu which he didn’t… so the sphere rained down and dug into his flesh, bruising him deeply. As writhed briefly he too like the Yari vanished, leaving behind only a two shuriken. Kurai maneuvered behind Cherry, upon arriving he steadied himself and… placed his hand on her shoulder. She growled silently. “I know that kunai trick, you botched the execution, and it wasn’t far enough away from you!” “Look again Cherry” “…the kunai you dug into the ground is still there…” “I thought you were watching the previous fights closer.” “The two shuriken you launched that you attached chakra strings to. But they were still in the guy. I can see how you would know that they would be far enough away, but how did you know they’d still be intact.” “I didn’t.” “Despite your analytical ability, you’re quite the risk taker. There is much more to you isn’t there?” “You can find out over lunch.”
