Hyuga Reiko

Rolling up the last scroll of paper, Reiko pushed the bundle into her back, closing the top and pulling it over her shoulder. She'd been planning on training today, but she guessed this would be no different. After all, being told to go explore the lands she was required to know in and out as a Shinobi of Konohagakure wasn't something she should argue against. That thought in itself seemed counterintuitive. Nodding to herself, Reiko straightened up, starting into the trees. She had figured that nobody had really attempted to look into the territory between the Hyuga lands and the border as thoroughly, considering that the specific border in that direction wasn't a troublesome one, and most left the Hyuga to themselves. She knew that most of her Konoha comrades thoug of the Hyuga as stuck up, or self-obsessed. That was true for a select few, but not all of them were like that. She guessed that all she could do was attempt to prove them wrong in her own way.

Jumping into the trees, Reiko began hopping her way trunk to trunk. She figured she'd wait until about two miles out and then start mapping. Not much of her clan tended to go beyond that point, as all of the training grounds they used the most were within the first mile or so. By her calculations, it would take her about a half hour to cover that ground at this leisurely pace. Then she could map a square mile or two, stop for lunch, and then map as much more as she could for the day until stopping for the night. The next day, she'd map the rest. Easy-peasy.

Her calculations ended up being correct. She stopped around a half hour later, slinging her bag off to pull out a scroll and some ink, along with a brush. The ground would provide a good enough surface to press again, or any rocks she found around. With that, she quickly outlined the area she planned to cover, from here to the border, about a square mile wide, each, with about 140 miles to the border. Frowning in disgruntlement, Reiko automatically knew this would take her more than two days. Shaking her head, she cut off 50 miles, figuring that to be the well trafficked area about the border. The middle was what nobody used. So... judging by time and amount of food and supplies she had, she figured 45 square miles, marking any significant landmarks. She could do that. She'd just have to work hard. After all, she didnt have to do the entire territory, just as much as willing. Nodding, Reiko stood and pulled out a kunai, slashing the closest tree before running in the opposite direction, she scroll held open between two hands while it dried, the kunai placed between her teeth. Choosing an area that had been mostly trees probably wasn't a good idea, but it probably was a good idea to map it anyway.

Judging by the shadows of the trees, Reiko marked herself every half hour. After three times of marking herself, she paused, sitting down at her map. The stop before this one, she had lined everything out by mile, and she was still taking miles by the half hour. At this point, she'd only finished about a mile, noted between the point she'd started and forward. One square mile, in an hour an a half. Granted, it had been mostly trees. She had found one boulder that had looked similar to bird at the right angle, and had marked that down as well as one large clearing. Shaking her head, she reached into her bag, adding more miles onto her mental calculations before she stopped for lunch. After this was over, she was never doing math of any sort again.

Frowning, she took a moment to mark down a river she knew ran by a village about a mile or so ahead. It was a small village, with barely 15 people living there, but they must have maps of surrounding areas. She'd take those and add them on, then continue on her way. Smiling at the prospect of a few miles being cut down, Reiko rolled up the map after testing that it was dry, before heading on her way once more.

~~~~~
Another two hours, another square mile covered. Reiko smiled, glancing back at the village. They'd been quaint, very kind to her. The leader of the village had been an old man, gray haired with age. After regailing her with a story or two of his younger years, he'd taken her on a trip around the village, and those who weren't out working the fields that were the town's livelihood were excited to point out what they knew. They'd easily turned that one square mile into four more, and that was just their lands. Even beyond that was about a half mile on all sides that they were solid on. When their memory got shady, Reiko had halted it. Turning in false information wouldn't do at all. They'd probably make her redo the mission if any of it was false. Glancing up at the sun, Reiko nodded. She'd fill in a bit more of the area to the west of the village, working her way towards the other edge, then stop for lunch.
~~~~~

By the time Reiko finished the miles around the village that were incomplete, it was about an hour after she'd planned to stop. But, she had 13 square miles at the map now, which was more than she'd been hoping for at this point. Time was rushed, considering she had to stop when the sun when down. Even if she could resume at dawn, that didn't help her much at all. At least she could do some exercises before sleeping. Munching quietly on the food she'd brought, Reiko leaned back against the tree, smiling. Compared to her normal days, she found herself liking this. Not only was she training but also completing a mission and gaining knowledge. Couldn't hope for better than that, right?  And she didn't even have to use Byakugan yet. She'd save that for later on, probably tomorrow. It'd be too easy with those, considering she could look for any distinguishing features of the land much more quickly. It'd almost be boring, and she wasn't very fond of that prospect. Shaking off the crumbs from the cloth she'd wrapped her lunch in, Reiko tucked it away and got herself ready, smiling at the lessening in weight of her bag, and starting off again.

By the time nightfall came, Reiko was absolutely exhausted. She'd ended up using her Byakugan some just before the end, only for about twenty minutes or so, and she'd ended up covering up to 25 miles now. Still, her body itself was was tired enough that she ended up flopping thankfully on the ground, setting her bag down next to her. You need to set up a barrier, she thought, and groaned, picking herself back up, bag in hand, and heading towards a nearby tree. She jumped up the branches, stopping on a sturdier one and looking around. She bounced a few times to test it, and then nodded to herself, plopping down. She reached into her bag and pulled out some rope. Threading it through her bag, she wrapped it around the tree trunk, and then around her waist, tying it tightly at her stomach. Blinking in relief, Reiko slumped back against the trunk, yawning, and closing her eyes. She'd completely forgotten to eat dinner, but at the moment, that barely bothered her at all.

A sound of rustling branches woke her the next morning. Reiko's eyes snapped open, and she froze, glancing around. Who...? Reaching down to her stomach, Reiko quickly pulled apart the knot, carefully coiling the rope around her arm. Grabbing hold of her bag, she hopped to her feet, one hand half-resting on the trunk to balance herself. She glared ahead, wondering what was going on. She moved forward, and at that moment, a bird took flight, rustling the branches around. Reiko sighed in relief, and slung her bag over her shoulder, going on her way. "Byakugan!" she said, deciding it was time to get things done quickly.

~~~~~
The sun was going down now, and Reiko paused at the end of her intended cover territory, looking proudly down at the now complete map. "Thank god," she muttered, turning back towards the village. "I'm done."
((Little bit of an abrupt completion, but done. WC: 1453 Miles Complete: 45/45))
