"Seriously? Again?" Those were the only two words that the shaggy headed youth could mutter from the tree branch on which he was perched, before a hawk landed next to him. It was a messenger bird. He had just gotten back to Konoha from the Village Hidden in the Clouds and was hoping for a day or two off. He had a book that he had been trying to read for days. But now, he was being summoned, yet again, to the administration building. Zinan hoped that it was not for some stupid, D-rank mission again. Being unassigned to a team, he tended to draw the short straw for meaningless and belittling missions; like catching an old lady's dog, babysitting students at the Academy, or other nonsense missions.

Zinan reached over to the hawk and untied the message tube and opened it. He slid out the small, rolled, slip of paper, pocketted it momentarily, and tied the message tube back onto he waiting leg of the hawk. He offered his arm to the bird, who looked at him quizzically, before hopping onto it. With a deft hoist, Zinan lifted the bird into the air, where it leaped from his arm and took flight. The hawk angled itself towards the Village and disappeared over the treetops.

The young Kumonosu shinobi pulled the message back out from his pocket and unrolled it. REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, POST-HENCE. Those six words were the only thing written on the paper; Zinan knew this for sure, because he flipped the paper back and forth in search of more instructions. With a sigh, the genin stood to his feet, stable on the branch, and dropped to the forest floor below. He was told to report post-hence, meaning, he needed to get there fast. The ninja took off at a trot and closed the distance to the main portion of the Village. With a soft grunt, Zinan launched himself upwards and landed softly on the roof of the nearest building. He began to bound over the rooftops and closed in on the Administration building. Once inside, he found that the Hokage was not present, but found an aide that told him that he needed to report to his new sensei.

New sensei?! The order confused him. He had no idea that he was being assigned to a sensei or a team. Zinan had longed to be so assigned, but he never expected it to happen this soon. Many of the Hidden Leaf Shinobi were out and about, so the thought of a reorganization never occurred to Zinan. After a quick inquiry, Zinan found out his sensei would be found in the Konoha Military Police Force's Headquarters, in his office. His own office! That means he must have some position, right? And the Konoha Military Police Force! That was an organization that always intrigued the young man. It was historically comprised of Uchiha's but there were always some outsiders found among its ranks. Maybe this was an opportunity to join its forces.

Zinan left the Administration Building in a hurry and swiftly made his way across the Village to the Konoha Military Police Force Headquarters. Though he was stopped that the door and was given a strange look when he said that his sensei was in here, the officers that were present pointed him the right direction. He walked down the halls of the building to find the name of the man, that he was told would be his sensei, emblazoned on a door. The door read: UCHIHA KYOHEI. Zinan knocked on the door and waited. Surely, the man must be inside.

“It feels good to be back on the job.”

The Uchiha took a long tip of coffee from his black mug, emblazoned with the centuries old symbol of the Konoha Military Police Force, and let out a deep, contented sigh. With the investigation being conducted on him following his return to the village complete, Kyohei was finally able to return to work, happy to discover that his office was still in the same condition he had left it before his failed mission all those months prior. Of course, some routine cleaning and dusting had been done in order to keep the space functional, but no wholesale changes had been made. He was sure that his office would have been given away soon after his disappearance and his assumed KIA status, but the chief staved off any attempts to replace him. It was not an insignificant debt that he now owed the chief in return.

Kyohei had spent the entire morning in meetings and partaking in the niceties that were expected of him upon his return, greeting former colleagues and sharing his story, however progressively fuzzy it seemed to be getting with each passing day. It was only after he was dragged to lunch with the force’s upper brass that he was able to get back to his home away from home, his office, after all this time. His first inclination was to place his mug down on the desk and throw himself into the seat of his comfortable, leather office chair and kick his feet up onto the desk in front of him. Taking a moment to enjoy the moment, his eyes would scan the room for anything that might be out of place or missing. One detail caught his attention, not for being misplaced or missing, but because he had forgotten it was there.

The Uchiha’s gaze was drawn to a framed picture of himself with Risu on vacation in the Waterfall Nation. Since his return he had not been able to obtain any credible information regarding her whereabouts, nor had he been free to pursue the matter on his own while under investigation. It was something at the forefront of his mind now that he had been cleared to resume work. One more name added to the list of people that he needed to hunt down, but her name was at the very top. In an almost trance-like state he remained, eyes locked on the picture and reminiscing before snapping back into the reality of the situation. His face contorted into a scowl as he reached his right hand to the top of the frame and flipped it downward, removing the image from his sight. It was time to get back to work.

Beside Kyohei’s desk sat a cardboard box full of files. These were the documents that had been collected and utilized in order to orchestrate his last mission that he had requested from the archivist earlier this morning. Their plan seemed perfect. The Uchiha had as close to complete information regarding the whereabouts and activities of Hataro as he ever had. Perhaps that should have been the red flag that they missed. It was all too clean. Someone… something like Hataro was not so careless as to allow such detailed information to slip. His detachment had been set up for failure, but by who? He was hoping that somewhere in these files he would be able to backtrack and find a source.

Like a student pulling an all-nighter on the eve of his final exams, Kyohei wasted no time in burying his face in the files and paperwork he had identified as critical. There was something there, hidden in the seemingly endless ocean of black ink, that would reveal more about what had happened that night and why the operation had failed so spectacularly. His eyes glowed a distinct shade of crimson read, using the eidetic prowess of the Sharingan to effectively photocopy still images of important pieces of information into his mind. Page by page he leafed through, his eyelids fluttering like a camera shutter whenever he came across a block of information he deemed noteworthy, blinking in order to get multiple exposures and ensure accuracy.

Becoming so consumed in his efforts, Kyohei would lose track of time, focusing only on the paperwork in front of him, burning through the piles page by page. His flow would be broken, however, by the sounds of knocking at his office door. His initial reaction was annoyance as he straightened up in his seat, followed by a sharp pain in his eyes brought on by prolonged, focus use of the Sharingan, causing him to deactivate it immediately. He rubbed his eyes vigorously in an attempt to dull the pain before turning his attention back to door.

“Enter.”

“Enter.” The word was short and crisp, the sound of a command. A word from someone who probably did not want to be disturbed. Yet, here he was; Zinan was disturbing this man. A man that he never met and knew nothing about. A man that he had only heard is name as of this morning, when he was told who he was assigned to. An Uchiha. An Uchiha on the Konoha Military Police Force. He sighed softly with a short shrug - I really need to stop shrugging, he quickly thought - and slid the door open. Inside, behind a desk, sat a man. He seemed tired, his eyes seemed worn. Zinan's black eyes quickly flitted around the room. There was a stack of files on his desk, some of which seemed as if they were quickly turned through. There was box on the floor next to the desk with more files in it. A picture frame on the desk was laying down, picture hidden underneath it. The room seemed clean, as if it was frequently dusted and swept. He did not see any sort of traps or danger, so Zinan stepped into the room.

He began, "Kumonosu Zinan, genin, reporting for duty, sir." His voices was gruff and soft, though it carried no tone of malice. He held out a small scroll. It was his orders. Like all shinobi, they were given orders for placement and duty. His told him that he was assigned to Uchiha Kyohei as a pupil, under special circumstances. The Village Hidden in the Leaves was short of Jounin, so pupils were being assigned to Special Jounin as well. Zinan just hoped that Kyohei had gotten word of this assignment before he got here, otherwise, this was going to be an awkward encounter.

Zinan had been assigned to a team before, but the other two members had disappeared before they even went on a single mission together. They may have defected from the Village, or they could have been killed. He was not certain what happened to them. But that was not his responsibility, nor his job. He was not ANBU; he was not Hunter-nin. When a ninja goes missing, when a ninja is placed in the Bingo Book, they were the ones to handle the situation, not a lowly genin. Sometimes, he was certain, the Konoha Military Police Force was assigned a search and retrieval mission, but all the stories that he has been told, hunting down defectors and criminals outside of the village, fell into the jurisdiction of the ANBU black ops and hunter-nin.

Zinan waited patiently for the man to respond to him. The glands on his forearms twitched, web was being produced, like always. He knew that he didn't need it, but there was no stopping biology. He would have to go expend it at the end of the day, per usual, if he didn't use it. He had been toying with the idea of making something with all the web that he produced, but he could not quite figure out what to do with it yet. A whip? Wire spools? Was it possible to heat the web into molten glass and make a blade from it? He did not know, but he was certainly willing to try.

Kyohei raised an eyebrow skeptically at the uninvited guest’s rather bizarre demonstration. Who was this kid and what the hell was he doing in this office were Kyohei’s immediate thoughts, followed by a quick scan to size up the person in front of him. The boy looked sickly, frail, and hungry, although Kyohei wondered if “boy” was an appropriate description as the person’s facial features did not look particularly childish, but the rest of him was hardly robust. The way he held out his scroll made the Uchiha first assume him to be a delivery boy, but all mail to HQ was processed downstairs, never taken directly to the private offices by outsiders. He must have just been one of the new cadets who got lost.

“What are you, an intern? This is an investigator’s office, kid, all of the clerical work gets done downstairs on the main floor. Go back downstairs to the reception area and ask for Miss Sumiko. She makes the wheels turn in this place. She’ll give you something to do. I assume you can see yourself out.”

Kyohei’s words were curt and to the point, making no effort to sugar coat his instructions or spare the person’s feelings. That wasn’t how Kyohei did things. As far as he was concerned, presenting the necessary information in the briefest way possible was nothing short of respecting the other person’s time, which was, to him, the ultimate form of respect. People who had so little to do that they were free to, or even enjoyed dragging on conversations with complete strangers beyond necessary were simultaneously the most unfortunate and enviable group possible in Kyohei’s mind.

Assuming that the person’s confusion had been demystified, Kyohei took a moment to take another large gulp of coffee from his mug before getting immediately back to burying himself in his paperwork. With both hands he would rub his eyes once more, prepping them for another intense session of scanning for clues.

Zinan waited while the man seemed to involve himself back into his paperwork. He took a big swig of coffee and rubbed his eyes. The man seemed to have completely disregarded Zinan's presence. Though it may have irked the younger man, he didn't let it show. His forearms twitched again, his web glands produced another three meters of glass web.

An intern? Zinan almost snorted in derision. He looked down at his clothes, noted that he was not wearing a Konoha Military Police Force badge or uniformed, and smiled. Apparently, his new sensei did not think much of him. Kyohei-sensei didn't even bother to give him so much as a chance to explain that he was not an intern, but, rather, his new disciple. Zinan continued to hold the scroll aloft.

"Kyohei-sensei, with that response, I'm assuming that you were not notified. I am not an intern, nor am I a member of the Konoha Military Police Force. Rather, I have been assigned, by the Hokage, to you as a student." He nodded towards the scroll that he held out. "This scroll explains everything."

Zinan was most definitely not a delivery boy, an intern, a new recruit, or a visitor that was lost within the confines of the Konoha Military Police Force's Headquarters. No, he did not stumble into the office of Uchiha Kyohei by accident. The Kumonosu came here with a purpose and a mission. He was here to meet with and to get to know his new sensei. He did not mean to interrupt, but he was a genin who has not had hands-on training with a sensei since he left the Academy. He was not certain why this was the case, but he was tired of it. Zinan was glad that the Village's administration felt the same and was doing something about it. However, as with all bureaucracy, when the administration does one thing right, they fail to do it entirely right, or its the only right thing that they can do. They managed to finally assign him a teacher, but they failed to notify said teacher.

“To me? As a student? No, that’s not possible. I have been off of the sensei-student rotation for two years now.”

Kyohei eyed Zinan skeptically, his eyes narrowing as his gaze fell to the scroll in his visitor’s outstretched hand. The Uchiha paused for a moment, shifting his glowering gaze back upwards to lock eyes with his supposed student before rising up from his seat. The intensity of his eyes never faltered as he approached his guest, maintaining eye contact all the way up until he accepted the scroll, unrolled it, and began to scan its contents.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

Kyohei rolled the scroll back up in a visibly irritated manner, causing the loud flapping of paper to fill the otherwise silent room. He held the scroll in his left hand, lowering his hand down to his side as he gripped the compacted scroll so tightly that the parchment began to contour to the shape of his fingers. Another moment of pause was taken to size up the prospective student once again. His time as an adjunct professor at the academy made him no stranger to teaching less advanced members of the village, but the person before him certainly wasn’t a child. He was also not particularly physically impressive, which Kyohei also found strange given the fact that his expertise resided in the fields of short-mid range ninjutsu duel, as well as weapons & hand to hand combat. Ninjutsu prowess was impossible to gauge by physical appearance alone, but this boy certainly did not look the part of a melee fighter. As far as Kyohei was concerned, the best thing he could do for the boy’s physical abilities at this point was to make him eat. Either way, there was only one place to go in order to get the answers Kyohei wanted.

“Come with me, kid. Close the door behind you.”

Kyohei moved past Zinan and into the hallway through the door behind him. He would bring himself to a complete stop only briefly to ensure that his instructions were being followed before turning left from the office and proceeding. The heavy thuds of his combat boots against the hallway’s tile floors boomed throughout the corridor, each stomp like thunder crashing around them in the cavernous hall, the Uchiha making no effort to mask his dissatisfaction with this latest surprise. Kyohei does not like surprises. About twenty paces down the hall he would come upon the elevator, pressing down on the upward facing arrow with his right index finger. Looking up at the floor numbers above the elevator door the Uchiha would see the “L” representing the lobby floor alight, signaling that the elevator was a ways away. These elevators had always been a bit slow.

Zinan held back a chuckle and kept his face stoic in response to Kyohei's reaction. The flapping of the paper caused the genin some concern. Though the orders technically were his to keep, Kyohei's rough handling of official paperwork made Zinan internally cringe.

No, he was not a particularly large man, nor was he particularly tough. Though, yes, the scroll described his abilities and specializations as close to mid-ranged ninjutsu and kenjustu, he preferred to fight on his own terms. He took the shinobi idea of fighting from an advantageous position to a whole new level, by forcing his opponent into a disadvantageous position. He did everything he could to slow, maim, and incapacitate an opponent before he closed the distance.

When he was instructed to follow his sensei, he nodded in affirmation and fell into step at a respectful distance behind Kyohei. As they past through the doorway, Zinan shut the door quietly and kept moving. His near silent footfalls were masked by Uchiha Kyohei's heavy steps in his combat boots. The man clearly was not happy with Zinan's assignment. There was nothing the genin could do about it. He was simply following orders.

The pair stopped in front of the elevators and Zinan noticed that Kyohei looked at the floor numbers. Following in suit, Zinan, too, looked. "L." Lobby. Great... This is going to be an awfully awkward wait, he thought. He did not even risk a sideways glance at the man that he stood next to. If Uchiha Kyohei needed something from him, he would address the genin. He resisted scratching an itch on his forearms: his glands produced another three meters of silken glass webs. He knew at this point, they were about the size of golf ball. Though they would keep expanding until he expelled the webs, the glands tended to get uncomfortable if they held too much of the web.

A few moments of silence followed as the duo awaited the arrival of the elevator. The situation was surely awkward for Zinan, who at this point must have been feeling quite uncomfortable with the rather brusque welcoming, or lack thereof, that he had received from the man who was supposed to train him. There was no lack of familiarity with interactions of this nature for Kyohei, however. The number of people who could describe him as anything but rough and tumble could likely be counted on one hand. He had never been one for small talk, nor did he enjoy having his time wasted with trivialities. The nature of his work as a detective had only emphasized those qualities, now needing to be harsh and stern most of his waking moments when dealing with hardened criminals.

The Konoha Military Police Force’s duties were at the same time far-reaching and very specific. There was a segment of the group dedicated to maintaining order and lawfulness within the confines of the village, which was now a village in name alone and more a fully functioning city. Due to Konohagakure still housing the majority of the Fire Nation’s shinobi population, efforts had historically been made to control the area’s civilian population growth, but while it was not quite a metropolis, it was a far cry from the dusty streets and wooden constructs birthed by Hashirama Senju’s Jukai Kōtan. Those “beat cops” were first responders to domestic issues, concerning both civilian and shinobi personnel. Their jurisdiction ended at the boundaries of Konohagakure, however, unless specifically authorized to pursue.

Once a target was outside of the village, the task of dealing with it fell to either specialized task forces within the Military Police or the village’s ANBU, both if the threat was significant enough. Kyohei was a member of one of those special task forces, or at least he was before his last assignment. The official job description was likely more akin to a detective. Detectives of the Military Police were often called upon to regions outside of the village to investigate illegal activity that was suspected or known to be the work of shinobi. The general philosophy was that ninja were the most well-equipped to eliminate or suppress the threat of other ninja. That philosophy was correct.

The panel before them made a loud “ding” sound before the two metallic doors slid open to reveal a rather large elevator, with a noticeably high ceiling and a very generous amount of room to work with. Kyohei entered the elevator and expected Zinan to do the same, pressing the button indicating the 9th floor, the highest level of the building. Once inside of the elevator, Kyohei felt the need to undress the uneasy feeling that seemed to be gnawing at his companion. It had appeared at several different instances since the boy had entered his office.

“You seem uneasy. Whatever it is, handle it before we get to the chief’s office. Depending on whether or not he’s eaten yet he can be quite irritable.”

Zinan was not expect a warm welcome, to say the least, but he was not expecting this. Uchiha Kyohei lived up to the young man's expectations of a member of one of the more "prestigious" clans of the Village Hidden in the Leaves: pompous, self-centered, and uncaring. Zinan just had to be assigned to an Uchiha. The genin knew the history of his village; he knew what the Uchiha had done over generations. He, honestly, did not care if Kyohei had to be hard to do his job. Coldness to another Hidden Leaf shinobi was uncalled for, especially to one that was assigned to him officially.

When the elevator opened, the two of them stepped inside. Zinan watched as Kyohei keyed the ninth floor button; the highest floor. The doors slid shut behind him and the elevator started its ascent. Kyohei then deemed it necessary to address Zinan and his "uneasiness." Zinan would not necessarily call it uneasiness, but rather, he was warring within himself; between the respect for those that were placed above him and his own temper.

"To be honest, Kyhoei-san, you have been rude to me from the moment I stepped into your office." It seems as of Zinan's temper won out over respect. The genin looked over at the Uchiha, anger evident in his eyes and features. "I have official orders to be your student, on paper, and yet, you do not want to recognize the orders of the Hokage. I do not know what has caused you to disrespect the orders of the Village, but whatever it is, has made you seem like a prick." Zinan turned his eyes away from the other man, his hands were clenched and white-knuckled. He was expected to be punched for his inappropriate comments and was not going to do anything to stop it. He knew that he deserved whatever punishment was to follow such an outburst.

But, what was said was said. There was no taking it back and Zinan let his voice be heard. Maybe this was not the best way to make a good first impression, but in the young man's eyes, Uchiha Kyohei was the one that started it and that fueled the anger in his gut. As for this chief that they were going to go and visit, Zinan did not give one damn if he was irritable or not. He did not fall under the provisions of the Konoha Military Police Force. Officially, he answered to Uchiha Kyohei and then the Hokage, Kenta Inuzuka, after him. The chief could go rot in the forest for all Zinan cared.

The anger and clenched fists, that Zinan held shut so tightly, flexed his web glands and tightened the skin across them. It burned and itched, but Zinan did not trust himself to move his clenched hands from his sides. He knew that his anger was making it difficult to keep from releasing some of the stored web, especially since they constantly produced more and more webs.

Kyohei took a moment to digest Zinan’s words, glaring at the boy form the corner of his eye. The Uchiha was more than slightly surprised by the sudden outburst, although it would not be outwardly evident. Perhaps he should not have been surprised, though. Ever since his return it had seemed like the people of the village were becoming more and more emboldened in their choice of words and tones when interacting with him. Even his subordinates had forgotten their sense of propriety. He pondered who he should make an example of to force people back in line, but pushed the idea to the darkest corners of his mind to be dealt with at a later time. Truthfully, it was surprising, but not entirely an unwelcome sight. He had long felt the youth of Konohagakure had become soft, spineless even. He couldn’t help but smirk at the audacity displayed by the skin and bones youth beside him.

“So you’re not as frail as you look.”

Kyohei’s words were not particularly loud or boisterous, but much more akin to a searing hiss, spoken with disparaging intent in addition to slight praise. It was more a backhanded compliment than a direct one, but Kyohei did find himself pleasantly surprised by the boy’s display. Even so, there was a portion of Zinan’s outburst that the Uchiha felt needed to be addressed. Corrected, even. Taking issue with his attitude was nothing revolutionary to Kyohei, but this idea that he should simply submit to the orders on that scroll without so much as a question was unacceptable.

“Fuck the Hokage’s office and fuck its orders. No one in that building has shown me enough to warrant the amount of ‘respect’ necessary to have me follow orders blindly like some obedient dog. I submit to no one.”

As he finished speaking, the loud dinging of the elevator would pierce the vacuum of silence his words left in their wake, signaling that their little ride had come to an end. The mechanical doors slid open with a less-than-gentle whirring sound and Kyohei wasted no time in stepping out of the elevator and continuing his pace towards the chief’s office. What Zinan had to say regarding his response was of little consequence at this point. Just a few paces down the hall the two would come upon a large set of wooden double-doors with the words ‘Chief Akimichi’ protruding outward in golden, metallic plating. The Uchiha would shoot one more remark back before placing his hand onto the door handle.

“Now fix your face, kid. This is an office building, not a daycare.”

What is that supposed to mean? Zinan thought with not a small amount a fury. He looked down at himself, intent on rebutting against the claim that he was frail. However, the argument was dashed against the fact that his ribs, though underneath his shirt, showed through his skin, and his arms were more lanky than muscular. He knew that he was pale and gaunt; not a very impressive sight. Though he was slight in build, he knew that he was not slight in personality.

The genin's eyes narrowed when the Uchiha started spouting off about questioning the Hokage and the lack of respect that he received. It was not good for a shinobi of a village to want to disobey and question the leader of said village. But, leave it to an Uchiha to want to defy village leadership.

When the elevator opened, the chime seemed louder than it should. Kyohei's adamant speech about not bowing down to the orders from the Hokage's office forced an awkward silence that hung heavy in the air. It grated against the training that was instilled in Zinan from the Academy, but some part of it rung true deep inside him. Zinan was the belittled second son to the second son of the Clan. He was in no way or part in line for Clan leadership, so he was constantly looked down upon and mistreated.  Zinan could understand not wanting to bow down to authority for authority's sake, but it went against everything he was trained to do.

The genin followed the Uchiha down the hall to the chief's office. There, the man told him to "fix [his] face." To Zinan, it seemed like he could not have been assigned to any douchier of a sensei. But, finding merit in the sentiment, Zinan did school himself and steeled his expression against whatever may lie behind the door.

Kyohei pulled open the door to reveal the almost chaotic scene of paper pushers and assistants jogging back and for the between rooms, a loud, booming voice projecting from the back so roughly that one would think the walls would shake.

“So I guess he hasn’t eaten yet, then. Stay alert and look out for any airborn office furniture.”

After a quick warning to the young man behind him, Kyohei proceeded inside. He walked straight ahead, seemingly paying no mind to the work or worried expressions of the assistants running around the office, never budging an inch and forcing them to adjust their course around him. He never looked back towards Zinan, but the Uchiha figured that not knowing him as they did Kyohei, it was likely they wouldn’t move for the genin the same way they did for his assigned mentor. Back when Kyohei was a new face, at least, he was bumped into constantly when things got hectic at HQ. That is, until the penalty for bumping into him became being set on fire. He recalls the interns being much more polite after that incident.

As they walked straight back the duo would pass the front desk of the police chief’s office, where his head secretary would wave frantically in Kyohei’s direction to greet him, never once breaking away from the chorded office phone glued to her ear or the documents she was filing. At this point Kyohei was familiar enough with the chief and his office staff that he could just walk in, so long as the old man wasn’t in a meeting. Kyohei stopped next to the secretary and tapped his left wrist three times as if asking for the time, to which she responded by freeing her hands for just a moment and making a spinning gesture with her wrist, like raising a spoon to one’s mouth. The Uchiha gave a single thumb up before continuing forward, towards the office even further in the back, the source of the boisterous yelling that resonated through the entire floor. They came upon another door, cracked open, doing little to mask the roaring that boomed from within. The door read “Choujiro Akimichi” in gold plating which, but Zinan would not have known that since the name plate was covered by a single sheet of white paper with the words, ‘DO NOT DISTURB’ and a note written below by someone else reading “Skipped breakfast, beware” scribbled on in marker and taped on.

“No breakfast either huh? Oh boy. Stand clear of the door, kid.”

Kyohei knocked three times before pushing the door open and casually pivoted to the left side of the doorway, spinning around to place his back against the wall, clear of the entrance.

“CAN’T YOU PEOPLE READ?!?”

The voice’s anger was now directed at those standing at its doorway. Within a second a chair would fly through the doorway, at such a rapid pace that it never once lost altitude as it flew across the office floor before knocking out an intern that was trying to transport documents back towards the reception area. Once the projectile had passed, Kyohei immediately turned and entered the office, paying no heed to the fate of Zinan. He was probably fine. The Uchiha had given him fair warning, in any case. Not his fault.

The scene within the room was one of barely controlled chaos. People were rushing about, papers, scrolls, and books were strewn everywhere, some people were yelling back and forth, some people were crying at their desks; Zinan had no idea what was going on, or how to make sense of it all. He did learn, rather quickly, in fact, that unless he walked in the wake of Uchiha Kyohei, he'd get run over by the people storming around. The genin began to realize why everyone was in such a panic: there was a loud rumbling voice that echoed through the room. Kyohei said something about the guy not eating yet. It amazed him that a person could get so angry just from not eating.

Sticking to Kyohei's shadow, the two of them stopped at the secretary's desk. Kyohei had a quick exchange with the lady before preceding to the door. Zinan could see the sign that read "Do not disturb," as well as the comical sub-note under it. At Kyohei's urging, Zinan spun around and pressed himself flat against the wall. He barely made himself safe before Kyohei flung the door open and a chair came soaring through. Zinan's eyes grew wide as the chair impacted with another individual and knocked him out cold. What in the hell is going on here? This was the most chaotic and disorganized organization that Zinan had ever seen; these were the people protecting the citizens of Konohagakure.

Without another word, Kyohei had stepped inside the office. Zinan quickly followed, his eyes still locked on the now prone form of the unfortunate intern. He finally brought his eyes back forward when he entered the room. Remembering the instructions that the Uchiha had given him when they left his office, Zinan applied it to the chief's office: when he entered the room, the genin shut the door behind him.

“Hey old man, have you lost your damn mind?”

Kyohei scolded the large, round man sitting behind the desk, whose yelling would subside immediately upon Kyohei’s entrance. That silence would only be temporary, however, as with a moment the Akimichi would open his mouth and inhale as if preparing to yell once more. Fortunately, by that time the Uchiha had already removed a chocolate candy bar from his jacket’s inside breast pocket and tore open the wrapper. During the chief’s inhale, Kyohei would toss the chocolate bar like a kunai directly into the chief’s mouth, wedging it between the man’s teeth. Without saying a word, the rotund man chomped down and devoured the entire chocolate bar in one go. Almost immediately the chief’s facial expression changed and his outrage subsided.

“Hm? Kyohei? What do you want? I’m busy.”

The man’s words were still audibly irritated, the chocolate bar serving as little more than a temporary sedative as opposed to a solution to the problem. The years that Kyohei had spent working with the Akimichi had developed the habit of keeping a stash of the chief’s favorite chocolate bars in his desk, taking one with him whenever he had to go deal with the man just in case situations like this arose.

“Why haven’t you eaten today? You know how you get when you skip meals. I have things to talk to you about and you’re up here howling and throwing chairs like a fucking monkey. I already cleared it with Naomi, so get your ass up. We’re going to lunch.”

“I’m the Chief of Police. Do you think I can just abandon my desk in the middle of the day when I’m swamped with paperwork on a whim? I don’t have time for anything.”

Kyohei’s facial expression bled skepticism, clearly having none of the story that Chief Akimichi was pushing. Remaining silent, the Uchiha marched his way all the way to the very front of the chief’s desk, slamming both hands down onto the wooden surface, sending a few stray papers flying out of place. The two men would spend a moment silently glaring at each other, as if both were daring the other to back down. Neither had any intention of doing so, but Kyohei would be the first one to break the silence.

“Since when do you not have time for barbeque?”

“B-barbeque?!?”

The Akimichi’s facial expression transformed from one of anger to one of bewilderment almost immediately, completely changing at the mention of that single word. As long as Kyohei had worked under the chief, he was privy to almost all of his quirks, including his almost obsessive live for barbeque. Food was always the one thing that could be leveraged against the Akimichi if one knew how to do so. Of course, their relationship probably played a factor, but after watching him eat, Kyohei was convinced that if the portion size was large enough, Choujiro would trade him in for some barbequed meat.

“Yeah, apparently this new place opened up down the street. I was going to ask you if you wanted to go check it out, but if you’re too busy for barbeque…”

“W-wait! I’ll let Naomi know I’m stepping out.”

“She already knows, let’s go old man. We should get out of here before that intern you knocked out with a chair comes to. You can blame the chair on me later.”

Chief Akimichi would then stand up from behind his desk, revealing himself to be an absolute mammoth of a man. Even by Akimichi standards Choujiro and his sons were large, standing much closer to seven feet tall than to six and all possessing the typical portly Akimichi body type necessary to pull off most of their hiden techniques. Kyohei was even intimidated by the sheer difference in size between them when they first met, but had been around that family for too long to even consider it at this point. One would think the loud thuds of his steps would almost shake the room as he stepped over to Kyohei.

“But you just got back, if he reports that, you’ll be written up on a disciplinary!”

“Since when has that stopped me? Start walking.”

With a wide grin, completely devoid of the anger that gripped his features only moments ago, the large man led the way and headed out of the office, with Kyohei following directly behind him. At no point in the exchange did either party stop to acknowledge to presence of Zinan, but Kyohei assumed he would follow after them if he was serious about this whole teacher thing. As skinny as he was, he looked like the first part of his training should be eating anyway.

Zinan did not know what was going on. He followed Kyohei into the office, still dumbfounded about the intern that was completely wrecked by a flying desk chair. He watched as the very round man behind the desk all exploded once more. Kyohei managed to stymie the next outburst by flinging a piece of chocolate between the man's fat, flabby jaws. If there was one family that Zinan disliked the most, it was the morbidly obese Akimichi clan. Sure, they were nice people, but Zinan could not stand their grotesque physiques and their gross appetites. They would eat and eat and eat, just so they could eat some more. It was disturbing and was not pleasant to be around. But, Zinan kept his expression schooled and his thoughts to himself, especially after seeing how familiar Uchiha Kyohei was with this man.

The Kumonosu observed as Kyohei all but ordered the man up from his desk and out to lunch. That surprised him. Kyohei was a subordinate to this around man, yet here was scolding the man for not eating and demanding that he got up and go out to eat. The Akimichi's resistance to the idea also surprised Zinan. He had never heard of a member of the Akimichi clan being opposed to getting food. On that note, the fact that the man did not eat breakfast surprised him too.

However, after a forceful impact against the police chief's desk and a silent stare down, Kyohei managed to convince the fat man with the mention of barbecue. The police chief turned from angry to agreeable in second. It was like he was putty in Kyohei's hands and the Uchiha could convince him to do anything at the mention of food. Zinan was concerned about this development. If the Uchiha could control the police chief with food, he could convince the man that Kyohei was not capable of acting as a sensei and Zinan would be without a teacher yet again.

The two men exchanged a familiar banter as they left the room. Not once did either one of them pay attention to him. Great, Zinan thought with disdain, more people to ignore my presence.... He cast his eyes down and slumped his shoulders. Slowly and quietly, the genin followed the two men out of the office and tugged at his sleeves, curing the itch that was constantly present on his forearms. This was becoming a disappointing engagement and he hoped that the Hokage did not screw him over with this assignment.

There was little substantive conversation between Kyohei and the Chief as they made their way out of the building. Having worked together so long and so closely, the two men were at a level of familiarity where silence between them was no longer awkward. But, as usual, the Chief very much liked to talk and dominated the conversation, making harmless inquiries in regards to how it felt to be back to work and recounting the strides he felt the department had made in the past year. For a moment it reminded Kyohei of his earliest days in the department, back before Choujiro was Chief and Kyohei was new blood being given his first assignment as the Akimichi’s partner.

“…And the kids are doing well too! They’re near the top of their class at the Academy! Speaking of kids… why is this one following us around like a lost puppy?”

Kyohei peered over his shoulders to share a view with Choujiro. From the corner of eye he would see Zinan and let out a frustrated sigh at the sight of the boy’s slouched shoulders and poor posture. As if this skinny kid needed any help in the area of looking fragile and completely unimposing. The Uchiha already knew that the Chief would not be a fan of the genin’s slumping gait. Despite being an absolute mountain of a man, Choujiro Akimichi took a great deal of pride in his appearance, particularly remaining strong and dignified. In his mind, people with poor posture had little respect for themselves or those around them who were forced to look at them.

“Him? Some kid that wandered into my office with a scroll from the Admin office telling him that he had been assigned to me as a student. I still don’t have all of the details myself. That’s why I came to your office. But since I found you in one of your ‘hangry’ fits, we’re now going to lunch.”

“Ah! So he’s the one that they sent over to you. Where are the rest of them? I figured that a full squad would have been a more traditional choice, but I guess this is what fit their needs at the time.”

“Wait, you knew about this?”

“Of course! I have regular briefings with the administration. They asked if I had any senior officers that could take genin in order to help ease the burden on the main forces, so I gave them your name.”

“You did what!?!”

“Oh come on, you’ve never taken on students before, right? And I can’t get a partner to stick with you for the life of me, but I’m sure that you know all about that…"

“I work better alone.”

“Yeah, yeah. Like I was saying, I think it will be good for you. It will certainly help with your advancement in the future, so just go with it.”

“Do I have a choice in the matter?”

“Nope. So kid, are you just going to sit bac there sulking? You’re a man, aren’t you? Stand up straight and introduce yourself!”

Shit, this is awful, Zinan thought as he trudged along behind the two men. They were gabbing it up, as if they had not seen each other in weeks. Talking about the fat man's kids and mentioning something about progress in a year. One thing that caught Zinan's attention was the talk about "being back at work." Back at work? Zinan stared at the Uchiha from under the bushy bangs that were hanging low over his eyes. Just who is this guy that I have been assigned to? Where was he? What was he doing? Why does it seem like he has been gone for a long while? All of these thoughts ran through Zinan's head in a rapid manner, but they were arrested and halted the moment that the fat man mentioned his presence. It was the first mention of him for what seemed like an eternity.

Uchiha Kyohei let out a sigh when he saw Zinan. Was he that much of a disappointment? Zinan had no idea what was wrong with this guy, much less why he was assigned to him. The genin cast his eyes downwards again when the two of them started bantering again. It seemed as if the fat man knew about Zinan's assignment, even if the Uchiha did not. The fat man seemed to have been expecting more than just one genin to be assigned to Kyohei. Who on earth would assign this grouchy man one genin, and why would the idea of assigning him more than one even cross any one's mind? Apparently, the fat man did, otherwise he would never have given the admin office Kyohei's name as a candidate for a team leader position.

The next thing the Kumonosu shinobi knew, he was being addressed by the Akimichi. He was given an order to stand up straight and introduce himself. Geez, what a pain in the ass... Zinan thought to himself. The last thing he wanted to do was draw attention to himself. He was totally fine with the two of them bantering along between themselves, as long as he was fed, that is. But now the spotlight of the conversation was on him and he was not sure if he liked it or not.

Zinan straightened his posture, as well as an angsty teen could. This apparently meant an upright set of a lopsided shoulders and one arm crossed over to grasp onto the other, just above the elbow. He fought the urge to itch at his web glands and, after a deep bow, he responded to the fat man.

"My name is Kumonosu Zinan, second son of Kumonosu Rokuro. I am a genin in rank, in service to Konohagakure no Sato." It was a very formal greeting, but that was the best that he could manage. Zinan was uncomfortable and would rather not be the subject of conversation anymore. This was a far cry from what he imagined this would be. He expected to give his new sensei the orders from the Hokage and the two of them would begin training. Not this. Not lunch with the largest man he had ever seen.

“Christ, he asked for your name, not your life’s story.”

Kyohei rolled his eyes at the overly formal display. Was that how kids these days were introducing themselves? They were no longer in the dark ages for Zinan to begin listing off his birth order and allegiance. He was a shinobi of Konohagakure, who attended the Konoha Shinobi Academy, who was assigned by the kage of Konohagakure to a Konoha Jounin employed by the Konoha Military Police Force. Did he think his allegiance was a secret? Unimpressed with the teen’s attempt, Kyohei turned his back to the conversation completely, instead scanning the street directly in front of them for the new restaurant that his colleagues at HQ had told him to visit.

The Chief simply broke out into a loud and hardy laugh, holding his belly as his deep bellows seemingly booing throughout the entire street area. With a laugh as large as his body, the Akimichi only served to draw further attention from pedestrians in the street, causing eyes of passerbys to fall upon Zinan.

“You’re a funny kid. Loosen up a little. Just because I told you to stand up straight doesn’t mean you have to be such a stiff!”

“Will you two hurry up? It’s that one over there with the red awning.”

Kyohei turned back towards his two companions and pointed in the direction of the storefront which sat about 20 feet down the block. Without another word the Uchiha picked up the pace of his gait towards the restaurant, as if to urge the other two members of the party along rather than continue to waste time in the middle of the street. Once in front of the restaurant he would pull open the door, causing the ring of the bell to notify the staff that new customers were entering the establishment. Before walking in he would lean his body back and look towards Zinan and Choujiro, waving for them to follow.

“Well, we can talk more over lunch kid. It’s best not to keep Kyohei waiting. He can become rather unpleasant to be around when he’s hungry.”

The Chief said those words with a wide, innocent grin as if his assessment of Kyohei was not rife with irony. The Akimichi would turn himself to stand beside Zinan and then push him forward with a ‘gentle’ slap (by his standards, in which gentle was usually enough to knock a grown man over) with his enormous, bear paw-esque hands large enough to palm a man’s head. Placing his hands back on his grumbling stomach the Chief happily marched towards the restaurant, eager to enjoy his meal and assuming that Zinan would follow.

Zinan's eyes shot over to the man that was supposed to be his sensei. For the first time, he actually saw the man. Kyohei could not be more then four years older than himself, yet he could see much weariness in his eyes. The genin wondered if how far the Uchiha had awakened his Sharingan. It was almost a given understanding for an Uchiha to have awakened at least one stage of their Sharingan before they were promoted to Chuunin. With the feeling that he was getting from this man, Zinan believed that he had awakened much more than simply one tomoe.

When the large man burst into laughter, it startled the genin. As a reflex, the Kumonosu snapped his left hand back to his tool pouch, slipped it inside, and leaped backwards a few meters, all in one fluid motion. He felt the grip of a kunai and the rough texture of the cloth wrapping, before he realize that the loud sound was not an attack. Cautiously, the shinobi let go of the kunai and brought his arm back forward. He straightened his body and dusted off the front of his tunic.

With an apologetic smirk and a short bow towards the Akimichi, he reacted to his sensei's urging, and hurried towards the restaurant. He heard the Police Chief's comments about being cranky from the lack of food as he passed by the large man and slowed his pace. He made a confused face and glanced towards Kyohei. His look, unseen by the Akimichi, read: He can not be serious, right now. This was quickly wiped clean when the large man clouted him on the back and all but knocked him from his feet. The bushy headed teen stumbled forward for a few meters until he was able to regain his footing.

Once he was able to take a normal step, he looked up to see that the Akimichi had already passed by him and was on his way into the restaurant. Of course. The fat man just wanted to knock me out of the way. With a scowl, the genin followed after the police chief and made his way to the door of the restaurant.

By the time Zinan and the Chief made their way inside the restaurant, Kyohei had already engaged with the hostess and requested a table for four. There were only three members of the party, but experience had taught him that when making plans involving the chief, it was best to just make accommodations for extra space. The Uchiha had no interest in trying to squeeze his way around Choujiro in the restaurant, although he imagined he could rather easily place Zinan in that position in his place. Either way, by the time that the restaurant’s doorbell chimed, signaling the entrance of the lagging duo, the hostess was already gathering their menus and leading signaling for Kyohei to follow her. A quick wave of his hand above his head was all the notification he would give to the rest of his group to move towards the dining area.

The restaurant had a fairly lax atmosphere, with a fairly contemporary theme framing the dining area. The most notable characteristic of the establishment itself was a large, open-fire grill in the rear of the restaurant, where customers could watch the chefs prepare the meats among the cresting flames. There was a certain buzz surrounding the diners, which Kyohei imagined was partially caused by the novelty of the recently opened establishment as well as the theatrics of the chefs over the flames. The Uchiha was somewhat surprised that they could be accommodated so easily, given that it was around lunch time and the restaurant did not appear to suffer from any shortage of customers, nearly every table in the house occupied by dutiful professionals on their lunch breaks. This area was rife with admin buildings for organizations within the city, causing it to be something of a hotspot for new and trendy restaurants to pop up. The sheer amount of competition for the lunch crowd in this area was likely the reason they could be seated so quickly. But Kyohei was thankful. At the very least it spared him from having to make awkward small talk with Zinan and the Chief outside on the street.

Within a few moments Kyohei and the hostess would arrive at the party’s table, a long, rectangular table with two seats on each side. The young hostess took a moment to distribute the menus to each of the seats, bowing and taking her leave after being dismissed by the Uchiha. Being the first to arrive at the table had its benefits, such as getting priority when determining seating. Under normal circumstances Kyohei would insist upon taking a seat facing the entrance to the restaurant in order to position himself to respond quickly to any unforeseen problems that might walk through the door. Given the company he was keeping during this excursion, however, he decided to take the corner seat closest to the door, his back turned to the entrance. Specifically, he was not going to sit on the same side of the table as the Chief, who would effectively be taking up the space of two people on his own. Whether Zinan grasped that on his own or not was inconsequential to Kyohei, who would simply begin browsing the menu until his two companions arrived and took their seats.

Zinan's eyes widened slightly when he walked into the restaurant. The dimmer light found inside the building had his pupils dilating and his eye lids pulling further back. Or at least, that is what he would say if someone spotted his amazement. The restaurant was impressive. The feature of the restaurant, the open-fire grill, roared with life and the chefs around it demonstrated their culinary skills. The fire was echoed in the carved wood and metal that decorated the posts, which held up the roof. The carvings were of spiraling tongues of flame and billowing clouds of smoke. The fire motif was balanced nicely with modern fixtures and contemporary decorations, such as photographs of famous shinobi and entertainers from Konoha.

His eyes spotted Kyohei as he waved his hand over his head. He had apparently already spoken with the hostess and got them a table. He has to know the owner of this place... Zinan mused. There was no way that the three of them would have gotten a table this fast, when the restaurant was this busy. Zinan did not recognize this place and wondered if it was a new establishment.

Zinan followed Kyohei and the hostess through the restaurant, though this mean that he had to weave in and around all the of milling wait staff and patrons. Crowds had always bothered the young man. If a crowd shared a single mindset and acted upon it, it would be like standing in the sea and trying to stand against the waves.

The genin made his way to the table just as the waitress was setting the menus down. Picking up on Kyohei's clues, Zinan sat on the same side as his sensei and allowed for the large man to sit on one side by himself. This had to be the most comfortable way to seat the table. The two ninja on one side would fill the table as two normal size people were. Meanwhile, the Akimichi would fill the other side of the table by his lonesome. Not waiting for the Police Chief to take a seat, the Kumonosu picked up the menu and started to browse the selections.

Although he was physically flipping through the pages of the menu booklet, Kyohei was merely killing time while awaiting what he knew to be the inevitable outcome of the traditional ritual of menu browsing. Things in restaurants never went exactly as a normal person would expect them to when dining with Choujiro Akimichi. To say the man was passionate about the dining experience was an understatement. The Uchiha shot a glance over to Zinan who had begun earnestly browsing the menu, amused by the naivety of the boy who had no idea what he had signed himself up for when he agreed to tag along for lunch. It didn’t take long for the group to decide what would be served to them. Or rather, it didn’t take long for the Chief who had turned the menu over completely to the family sized menu items to decide what he wanted, which effectively shoehorned the other two members of the party into going along with it.

“It’s decided then! To signify this joining of wills, we shall have a feast! Waitress! We’re ready to order!”

The Akimichi had not only spoken loudly enough to halt nearby conversations and draw the attention of other diners towards their table, but also raised himself from his seat mid monologue. Kyohei, having been through scenes like this so many times before, was completely unfazed by the outlandishness of the display and casually slid his menu to the center of the table in deference to the Chief. When the man was hungry there was no debating or reasoning with him, and it was often best to just go along with him until he had returned to his usual self. A frazzled waitress hurried over to their table, notepad in hand, clearly surprised by the sudden outburst. After all, they had not even made a drink order yet.

“S-sorry for the wait. What can I get for you?”

“We will have the item C on your family menu!”

“That order feeds 12 people… are you expecting more? I can have them move you to a larger table…”

“Didn’t you hear me? We’re having a feast! This is a momentous occasion! A larger table will not be necessary unless you want to fill it with more food.”

“Err… ok. Will that be all…?”

“That will be all for now. Now please get that order to the kitchen stat! I’m dying from starvation over here!”

The woman gave the Chief a puzzled look, wondering if he realized his own size to be making claims about starvation. A laminated menu would come into her view, lifted by Kyohei for her to take. A welcome change for her from the unusual line of conversation coming from the Akimichi man.

“I’ll have a sweetened iced tea. I guess we should also get water for the table. Sorry about the old man, but you should probably put that order in before he starts eating the furniture.”

“Who are you calling old, you little brat?!?”

Zinan was genuinely browsing the menu, as quiet as he was normally, when the Akimichi burst from his seat. The roar of the fat man startled the genin, who quickly glanced about the room, expecting to be attacked. Realizing that he had drawn his kunai, Zinan quickly stowed it and looked about the room. Only then, did he hear the words of the large man across from him. He was calling for the waitress to come back to take their food order. "But I am not ready...." His voice was lost in the loud voice of the Chief of Police. Zinan scratched at his web glands, his irritation reflecting in the sensation that they felt.

The waitress hurriedly made her way back to their table and was prepared to take their drink orders when the Akimichi started ordering food. Clearly flustered, the waitress managed to adapt to the situation, and, though frazzled, managed to handle the fat man. However, Zinan was not pleased that the Chief was ordering his food for him. But I do not want to eat...." Zinan caught himself once again. There was no way that the waitress or the Chief was going to hear his voice over the boisterous man's antics.

Zinan shot his eyes over to the Uchiha who sat next to him. He was looking forward to eating sukiyaki and now he was going to be forced to eat whatever item C was on the menu. His look begged the question: This can not be happening, right?

The Kumonosu was not certain if his supposed sensei even saw his look, as the man raised his menu up and ordered a drink. Following the Uchiha's lead, Zinan raised his plastic-coated menu and muttered. "Since I do not have any say in what I am eating, I guess I will have a cup of nihonshu...." Zinan shot a sideways glance at the Akimichi across from him. He was not certain if the man would even catch the meaning of his look in the midst of all his boisterous antics. Zinan was not certain if Kyohei was serious about the Chief eating furniture, but judging by the man's girth, Zinan would not be surprised.

“Nihonshu?!? Alcohol is poison to the mind and body! It dulls the senses and deranges the mind! We shall not be partaking in such irresponsible consumption!”

Choujiro shouted out in protest to the waitress once more, causing the waitress to scratch the item from her notepad as she fled to the kitchen to submit the order. A piece of information that Kyohei had not deemed important to mention was the fact that the Chief was a self-proclaimed teetotaler, openly chiding the consumption of alcohol as detrimental to the development of a shinobi. He had similar feelings about most common vices, even the smoking habit common amongst members of the police force. He didn’t necessarily succeed in stopping those officers from smoking or hitting bars, but there was certainly a great deal less of it done openly or at the precinct under his administration than the previous. Ironically, he did not view the excess consumption of food as a vice. This was likely due to being an Akimichi and therefore high amounts of excess caloric stores empowered his ability to perform ninshu. The Chief viewed food not only as a key to survival or a thing to be enjoyed, but a critical component of becoming a powerful and effective shinobi.

“Don’t press the issue, kid. Plenty of people have tried to talk to old man off of his high horse, but he’s stuck in that saddle for the long haul. We all just drink behind his back.”

Kyohei did not even make an effort to lower his voice, not caring enough about hiding that information from the Chief to speak any way but plainly. The Chief already knew that members of the police force both smoked and drank behind his back, but as long as they weren’t doing it overtly he allowed the men and women beneath him to indulge in their vices. He couldn’t very well expect the lives of dozens of people to change just for him overnight. Being relatively new to the positions, just having finished up his second year, he mostly just wanted to lead by example and cultivate good habits and lifestyles for his people. It was for this reason that no one in the department resented him for the changes. He was beloved before his appointment as the Police Chief and he was beloved after. Being a bit overbearing was in his personality, so if anything having him buried under stacks of paperwork in his office upstairs gave everyone in the department more operational freedom than before when he was out in the field with them.

“Nothing like a meal to bring people together. I wonder though, why did they assign you to Kyohei, Zinan, wasn’t it? I know that the Administration likes to place students with senior shinobi who share some adjacencies in their skillset whenever possible. To promote optimal development and all that. I’m quite familiar with Kyohei, but what is it exactly that YOU do?

"But I wa-" Zinan's protest died in his throat and eyed the waitress as she scratched off her note about the alcohol. This lunch was turning into quite the boring endeavor. All he wanted to do today was meet his sensei and start training. Yet, here he was, being denied his alcohol and being unable to order his own food. What was he? A child? He was about to call the waitress back to order the alcohol when Kyohei-sensei spoke up about drinking behind the Police Chief's back.

Zinan did not care about the Three Taboos of a Ninja. He liked drinking alcohol, money, and, though he was normally unlucky in this respect, women. He believed that the Three Taboos were not created to keep a shinobi from turning evil, but to keep a shinobi from having desires for this world. Such desires would make a shinobi a person and not a disposable tool.

Luckily, the topic of the conversation changed from Zinan's undesired food choice and the lack of his alcohol to what he could actually do. What was his skill set? What did he train to do?

Zinan plucked at his bottom lip for a moment. Coming up with the words to say, he straightened his slouched position slightly, and spoke up. "I am certain that they assigned me to Kyohei-sensei due to my ability to impede other shinobi. I am a trapper. I may not be the strongest fighter but I am good at supporting my team."

Zinan knew where his strengths lay. He was not very effective in a one on one confrontation, nor was he good in a fair fight. But if he was paired up with other shinobi or had the time to set a trap before a conflict, Zinan really showed his true colors.
