“A trapper, huh? Interesting. I can see the value in that from a team composition standpoint, but I wonder what they hoped to achieve by placing you under his tutelage if the only goal was development. He has a keen tactical mind, to be sure, but Kyohei is very much a combatant. I would say that his direct combat ability is his greatest asset in a martial capacity, although that is almost always a given considering he’s an Uchiha. Feisty group, that clan is. Certainly no strangers to controversy throughout the years, but firmly rooted in the history of Konohagakure. They earn their position as one of the Four Noble Houses of The Leaf every day. I rememb-”

The loud ringing of metal against glass pierced through the conversation, causing the Chief to pause and look over for the source of the disturbance. There sat Kyohei, with a single piece of silverware in his hand, a fork which he had struck against an empty drinking glass, and a displeased frown on his face.

“Enough with the clan talk, old man. Dwelling in the past does nothing for the future. I am me, nothing more.”

Immediately shifting gears, Kyohei directed his the conversation next back to Zinan, who had only begun to divulge the information that Kyohei needed. He turned his head towards the boy slightly to allow no question to whom he was speaking.

“Don’t mind the old man when he gets into his history lessons. Give him something else to occupy that big mouth of his and you’ll be fine. Unfortunately our food isn’t here yet to shut his trap.”

Kyohei raised both arms above his head, stretching out his back and shoulders before lowering his arms and crossing them behind his head to use as a headrest in his chair, turning his head directly forward again.

“Ah well. No telling what those paper pushers at the main office are planning. Most of the time their heads are buried so far down in their own bureaucracy that they can’t see the way ahead. That’s why we take care of things ourselves when we have to. So I guess the real question is what do you want to do? I can’t do much to help you achieve your goals if I don’t know what they are. Give me a place to start, kid.”

Zinan felt a little pride in his chest when the Police Chief stated that he could see in the value of having a trapper in a shinobi team. This pride was short lived and faded away, as the man carried on about the Uchiha clan. It was as if the Police Chief was in his own little world and everyone else was subject to his rule of boring knowledge.

This boring monologue was sharply pierced by the high pitch ping of a metal fork on glass. Zinan shifted his attention to the perpetrator, his sensei, and smiled a quick smile of relief. He hid this smirk with his hand, which prevented anyone, except for the Uchiha to see it. It seemed as is Kyohei-sensei was not willing to discuss the history of his clan. Kumonosu Zinan was fully aware of the dark and tainted history of the Uchiha clan and was not needing a history lesson of it. Zinan was a bookworm, after all. He had studied up and read through many scrolls about the major clans of the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

Uchiha Kyohei-sensei turned his attention back to Zinan and murmured about not being able to feed the fat man to shut him up. Once more, the Uchiha mentioned some disdain toward the administration of the Village. Zinan fought back another smirk. Despite his claims, Kyohei-sensei showed tendencies to fight against the established system of the village.

Kyohei-sensei wanted to know what he wanted to do, what Zinan's goals were. Zinan paused for a moment. No one had ever asked him that before. They were always concerned about training him for the style of ninjutsu that he excelled in, but they were normally not concerned with what he, the actual shinobi, wanted to do with his talents. His mind raced; images of his childhood ran rampant, the lack of attention, the sneers from his older brother, the failure to be recognized as a useful shinobi, the feelings of dejection and loneliness.

"I want power that is recognized internationally," the genin blurted out. He quickly clamped his mouth shut and closed his eyes, expecting to be hit for his impudence and outlandish dreams. Growing up, he was put down for his independence and desires to be stronger than his elder brother. He was never allowed to shine on his own.

The chief’s face turned from one of annoyance at Kyohei’s repeated jabs to one of interest at Zinan’s answer, raising an eyebrow curiously at the grandiose nature of the claim. Kyohei, however, did not so much as wince at the boy’s claim, as if what he had announced was not even worth a reaction. The desire for fame, although generally not a trait valued highly by the shinobi world, was common enough amongst the young, those who had yet to understand the true value of anonymity. The desire for power even more so, and far more widespread against all age groups. The Uchiha placed hand over hand on the table before him, never once looking Zinan’s way, instead keeping his gaze trained straight ahead of him.

“Is that it then? That is the extent of your ambition? Power to what end? The pursuit of power for power’s sake is a fool’s endeavor. The passages of history are riddled with the bodies of men who could not see the forest for the trees.”

The Uchiha’s tone had grown cold and unwavering, as if to emphasize the folly of the blind pursuit of power. But young Zinan had yet to reveal the extent of his ambition, surely. Even a genin should have had some clarity in their goals, some longstanding dream worth striving for, however distant or impossible it might seem. Pragmatism was valuable. The ability to look at a situation and find the optimal route for success, independent of cumbersome emotional constraints made good soldiers and good controllers. But how far a pragmatist could go was limited by the narrow world view they saw as reality. To believe in only what the human eye could see as the mark of a man cursed to remain within the confines of their pitiful existence, the Sharingan’s ability to cut through illusions and see the truths of this world had taught him that. Blind idealism may be doomed to fail, but a complete lack of idealism may never reach the heights at which others fail.

all of what they wanted to hear. He knew that many people in history died in the pursuit of power, simply for power's sake. That was not a goal that any shinobi should strive for. There should always be a purpose or a goal that a ninja wants to achieve with the power that they acquire. While selfish and childish, he would like to have power to be recognized internationally, the true purpose behind that desire is, surprisingly, noble.

"I-I..." the young shinobi stammered. He did not want he goal to sound immature to these experienced ninja. Zinan took and deep breath and sighed, closing his eyes. He murmured the truth. "I want to be acknowledge as someone of use. All my life, I have been told that I was second-rate and unneeded. I want to be acknowledged as someone that the village needs and puts faith and trust in." He sighed again.

"But that's not all. I want that acknowledgement to deter threats to the village, both domestic and foreign. I want power that strikes fear in the heart of criminals and enemies." He tone took a darker, more serious tone than before. "I want thugs and thieves to whisper my name in terror as I exit the shadows. I want the mere possibility of my appearance to deter the low-lives of society from committing atrocious acts."

Zinan took a deep breath. He did not realize that he was not breathing throughout his extrapolation. He opened his eyes and lifted his head. He looked to Kyohei-sensei and the Chief. The genin expected hard expressions and to be told that he goals are immature and that he should just give up. Not willing to face that reality, Zinan stood to his feet abruptly. He bowed to the two men, begging for their leave. He could feel his face getting hot. He was embarrassed. For the first time in his life, he had revealed the truth about what he wanted to someone. And not just anyone; the Chief of the Konoha Police Force.
