There were days that Kuni was grateful that Iwagakure was prospering economically. It gave her access to the best equipment that most ninja dreamed about, simply for having the profession tagged to her name whenever she walked up to the reception handling these issues. But on the other days, an unease fell upon her at the village's newfound wealth, a flow of prosperity that couldn't have come from unstained hands. Ninja or not, there were boundaries that were dangerous to cross, and she suspected many of them had been outright redrawn in rebuilding Iwagakure's reputation.

Or, her paranoia and detachment from the village painted the village a darker shade of brown than the banner on the Tsuchikage's office, or that which stared straight at her, hung regally over the entrance opposite where she'd walked in.

There were many training grounds strategically placed around the village, most of them found on the outskirts where the daily remodelling didn't diffuse into the civilians' daily lives. Fewer knew about the underground training facilities that were pricier to book on the peak hours, and absolutely free but forgotten at times like this, when the clock struck twelve midnight yet the underground arena remained illuminated bright as day by the lights on the four corners of the ceiling, mounted above cameras that ensured no foul play occurred in these isolated halls. Medics were on standby no more than a minute away, with the facility built up around a research institute with no abundance of medic nin but also with enough to tend to the occasional injury, but as Kuni sat beside the entrance waiting for someone to enter from either direction, she couldn't help but feel that the cameras also made sure no one did anything questionable in these training rooms.

She'd signed up for a spar the day before, though as it was a blind matchup she wasn't told who would be joining her at this time of the night, the only slot where it was free for the day. Maybe her partner would've been informed ahead of time of the brunette who was looking to improve herself, though Kuni's picture in return was an absolute blank sheet.

Kokai moved down the entrance tunnel into the arena. Shadows played on the wall but none of which were his. The dim light playing on the wall in the near dark to tell some story to distorted to make out. Each step echoing on the stone floor as he progressed closer and closer to his assigned opponent. The genin match ups always drew the short straw with him it seemed. The arena was too large for the ninjutsu users to get away and he wasn't above charging through a couple of burns to maul an opponent with his bare hands. None of them had been like that day in the market. His hair was matted down from a shower in the locker room but it wasn't dripping...if anything the tips were frosted over. His pace slowed and halted as he turned to look at a mirror. The edges already beginning to frost over. He was in his reflection a monster.....even the clan of murderers for money wouldn't keep him. What good was a dog that could not be leashed or control his fangs...He stared into the mirror for a moment longer as he built up determination not to use jutsu for yet another fight. Not to use that ability which maimed his friend and cost him everything. He would win with taijutsu alone or fall. That was his way. His resolve setting itself entirely as the mirror itself frosted over so the image could no longer be made out. He was a warrior and need not think beyond that.

Too many thoughts meant too many distractions. His attention was drawn back to the hall as his match was scheduled to start soon. Random as it was he couldn't help but feel the pressure of full on combat. Few entered the arena and did not bleed. Even his sensei, a monolith that was currently out of the country, held his matches here. Televised for the world to see. He too would be a monolith in time. Perhaps these fights would be used in a reel in his rise to that position. His knuckles popped as he clenched his fists and proceeded down the hall. Emerging into the better lit arena to witness a girl sitting at the opposing entrance. As soon as he entered she would feel what all members of his clan put off. A cold aura like winter come in the morning. The temperature in the room dropping despite the strain of the AC down to freezing. From beneath his matted down hair glowing crimson eye marked her and watched unblinking. He held no reservations about fighting a female. He held no illusions she would be any less challenging. Kokai himself stood on his side of the arena with boots leading into blue jeans with a kunai tucked into his belt loop. A black tank top was all he wore for a top and yet something was off. Kokai did not cast a shadow. He didn't feel like the average genin and he was staring right at her. Waiting for her to rise to the challenge and attempt to cut him. To win the match and grow stronger as he intended to do. His hands clenching over fingerless leather gloves audibly as he looked to the camera briefly. The light showed it was one which meant one way or the other....a medic was on stand by.

The brunette was kept waiting on the floor for little more than a few minutes when she was alerted to an incoming presence, her senses tingling as her mind registered the new presence. But, what kept her on edge wasn't so much the typical sound of footsteps from a dark corridor, but the sensation of death rolling into the room like a playful child trumpeting its parent's arrival. The feeling crawled up her spine in a mischievous tickle, like the flat of a gravestone pressed against her back, the immacutely carved arch of her tombstone smiling against her. She noticed the sweat on her hands pressed against the concrete arena floor, the coating mistakenly feeling slightly like the dampening grounds of soil on a misted night, the undeniable texture of her own grave that had just spat out her corpse. Her nose twitched reflexively, reeling from the imaginary scent of corpses wafting lazily and carefreely in the air.

Kuni's hazel eyes narrowed, and her form steadily rose as her opponent entered. His black, matted hair stood in spikes, with pale skin disappearing behind a tight black tank top pulled slightly over blue jeans, which were fastened to his waist with a loose black belt, housing the standard Iwagakure kunai through one of its loops. Each step he took from his side of the area rang clearly in Kuni's ears from the boots on his soles. A heavy air of practiced carelessness clung onto him, betrayed only by the clenched fists dangling by his sides, cracking with the impatience to meet bare flesh.

Mostly unaffected by the overwhelming sensation of the afterlife that embraced her like the sun, only with a touch cold to the skin, she mirrored his steps until she was a few feet from her entrance. She was far from one of the best Genin she knew, physically unable to last half as long as the others and easily being outrun by even the freshest of Genin who'd taken to a strict regime. Her trump card, her Genjutsu, was off limits, she'd been told, too questionable to be used in a friendly spar such as this, leaving her defenseless save the few assortments she held in the pouch on her right hip. Seeing his bulging muscles, he doubtlessly fell into the latter category of intimidating predators, but a word of caution would only help those gifted enough to carry out its pleas.

Kuni? Unlikely.

Her fists clenched tightly in anticipation of the fight before her. Being out of her element was enough of a choke hold, and the added theatrics that radiated needlessly off this man didn't help matters. Somewhere at the back of her mind, the necrotic properties of the exiled Karasu clan played themselves out like understudies on a stage, but it was all pushed aside from the excitement at the forefront. Such knowledge wasn't going to be helpful, especially with the lack of her only talent to back her up, subjecting her only to the keenness of her kunai as she waited for him to make the first move.

Kokai had entered and shifted his gaze until the sound of her rising caught his attention. He couldn't sense much from her which made her an unknown factor. His training sized her up and judged she was likely more fast than she was strong. A lithe form suggested flexibility. Determination and stance suggested less of a taijutsu focus and yet an amount of physical training. The way she held herself was different than someone who intended to stay at a distance. This was further proven by her walking towards him with a determined gaze. His crimson eyes burning into her as he considered what made her confident enough to get close to him. His shoulders rolled as he took a deep breath and focused on the task at hand. He couldn't hold back without taking damage and yet, if he lost control of his chakra much like his friend she would.....no...there were trained medics on standby that were better than his clan compounds had been. He could pull back fast enough if those dark flames emerged. He had to remain confident of that. If he allowed it to distract him she could really do some damage. He had faced women in battle before and been taught through blood not to underestimate them based on gender.

Still as they arrived at the center of the arena he would stop mid stride and plant his right fist into his open left palm. Bowing his head to her. He was cold and anger seemed to radiate off of him like he had something to get off his chest by beating it into her but he was still remaining formal. He spoke in a gravely voice...deep baritone with out much joy in it. His eyes never leaving her even when he bowed. "May our fight be honorable." A funny concept to him as he was lost to his clan without honor for losing control during a fight. What use did a clan of assassins have for an assassin that couldn't control his abilities. He would shift immediately after speaking. His feet spreading with his right foot forward and his left foot behind his left shoulder for increased balance. His form lowered slightly for a lower center of gravity as his left hand lowered to his waist with his fist turned upside down and his right fist lifted to in front of his face turned sideways.

Kokai would breath in as he waited just long enough for her to either take a pose or forgo it entirely before he would move on his exhale. A sudden burst of spinning movement in a half spin which shifted his boots on the ground in the opposing position they had just been in. with his left fist spinning and slamming forward with ferocious speed and power. It was a straight jab attack without a feint but it was designed with a purpose. He was testing her capabilities and putting out a feeler right off the bat. He wanted to see how her stance shifted and how she responded to a full speed attack. He didn't know anything about her fighting style so this was his learning moment. It would only pick up in pace from there. Those dark crimson eyes watching her closely. Still his right hand was kept close to his chest with the fist still clenched in preparation. Should she be as fast as she looked he needed to be able to defend quickly.
