Chiharu

The sun was slowly setting over the trade hub that was Chiharu. The last golden rays dancing in the waves of the sea, a perfect horizon scarred by plumes of smoke rising up from the Land of Frost. The city itself was as busy as ever despite the tensions brought forward by news of war. The show had to go on, even if there was a risk everything could end up in flames sooner or later, and the industrious people of Chiharu would have it none other. But where the people did what they could to lay their hands on what could possibly their last bits of coins, the hermit who sat on top of one of the buildings had a frown of worry on her face. Blue-green eyes looked into the distance, towards the horizon. She had heard about the assault on the Land of Frost, but what words couldn't convey was filled in by the plumes. It was true; Konoha was on a warpath, and the Land of Frost was suffering greatly for it.

It was a worrisome thought; Konoha having chosen the most opportune moment to strike now that Kumogakure had lost their Raikage and the Village was suffering a civil war. Even with Daremo appointed as acting kage for the time being, the Jashinist incursion and the civil war both had struck deep wounds within the Villages political unity, its economy and the trust of the population that lived under what should have been the protective hand of the Raikage. Kumogakure was left in shambles as it was, and Konohagakure believed they'd gain glory from wrecking a Village in turmoil even more. As if they had learned nothing from the Destruction of Sunagakure and the Siege of Inabayama. The Sword Saint of Konoha who ruined the Land of Wind was now being followed by a man who was possibly just as bloodlusty and mad - Takao Kimura. Mitsuo Sarutobi's reasons were one of supposed justice. A self-proclaimed right that it was his solemn duty to eradicate the corruption in the Land of Wind. It made the hermit wonder what the Dragon's reasons were that he'd walk a similar path. Respect for Mitsuo? A desire to surpass the Mad Man of Konoha? A similar self-righteous justice? Or did he believe it was his duty to take care of Hastur Miyamoto, even though Mizuki had told him in the past she was well aware of the monster seating under the Raikage hat?

The questions would not be answered, her thoughts brushed away by a passing wind. All that Mizuki knew was that they'd soon enough stand at the doorsteps of a broken Village to see it trampled further much like Sunagakure's ruins. Could she blame them? No, unlike the Dragon, Mizuki was not a blind hypocrite. She knew what Hastur had done, and she had more than expected Kumogakure to pay for his sickly actions. A vast difference with the Dragon who cared none for the destruction his elder Sword Saint had wrought and continued to start a fire under the feet of the other Villages under the guise of 'supporting Sunagakure' while wearing the headband of different Villages. No. Konohagakure had hardly paid for their foulness, but Kumogakure would not be left that chance. The Jashinists, the civil war, now Konoha. Even if her heart ached at the coming future, Kumogakure would be reaping what Hastur Miyamoto had been sowing - it was harrowing to realise the lives of so many innocents had to pay dearly for the transgressions of a dead man. But biased by the Dragon's former actions and words during the Siege of Inabayama, Mizuki didn't believe the current Hokage to harbour sufficient wisdom or insight to understand that they had nothing to do with Hastur's malevolence.

But what good would mulling over the reasons and repercussions do her? None. Leading the Resistance against Hastur was a daunting task that had achieved one step towards the right direction - Hastur was dead. The rest was a matter of cleaning up and rebuilding now, and what little would remain of Kumogakure after several attacks simply had to endure. Mizuki could know; Kumogakure had never been the biggest Village of the Five Nations but they were infused with the resilience of the mountains they lived in and the power of the lightning that crackled over it. If there was one Village that could, no, should endure, it was Kumogakure. Dark tidings would come as she had predicted; an era of turmoil before peace could finally return. And with that vision in mind, the hermit would stand up and start her eagle-like surveillance over the crowd with a single hand seal. She had not come her to meditate, after all. She had come her to keep watch on possible infiltrators.

By opening the mind's eye, the practitioner is able to find and track an individual's chakra over a vast distance of 350m. Focusing on that particular chakra, the user can perceive the target's exact position, their movement and the surrounding area they are in with great detail.

This ability grants them the capability to perceive a person's chakra flow, and discover any form of fluctuations made when a person is lying or if that person (could be the practitioner themselves), is under a genjutsu, chakra poison or other form of chakra disruption.

Chiaki landed in the middle of the village in Kaminari no Kuni, having jumped through a couple hoops, and off of a couple of rooftops to get there. She looked about, smelling the stench of smoke on the air, and looking at the brilliant sunrise it brought. It was a horrible price to pay for a sunrise as stunning as this. Chiaki pulled up her black hood, covering her face and slid on a mask that hid her true identity. No need for people to be alarmed by her presence. She had her headband tucked safely away underneath the robes, and she pulled them tighter over herself. She couldn't help but feel like she was being watched. Her coin pouch was jingling at her side and she had come here because she had heard that there might be hot springs, but now all that she wanted to do was help the people here.

There were people wandering around in the streets, they were hurried but also slow, almost like they were moving quickly, but also at the pace of a snail. They were downtrodden, hungry, and all had a thirst for their lives that she hadn't seen in... well... Chiaki had actually never seen this. They were almost like zombies. She looked around and started to make a B line for the nearest hospital, drawing her cloak ever closer over her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.

She rounded a corner and saw the stairs. That was her destination. Moving through the crowd wasn't a problem. Her problem, however, was trying to remain inconspicuous. She was already receiving unwanted stares. perhaps the mask was a bit much. Sliding it off, she put it in one of the rather large pockets of the robes and continued. She was walking, much like the villagers, in a sort of daze, her eyes straight ahead but not blank like the rest of them. If only she could get to the hospital, then it would be game over for her mission. Her personal mission. One that she knew now that she had to do.

A grin lit her face as her determination lit her soul.

Eyes glided over the crowd. Here and there, a person seemingly lit up as the presence of chakra betrayed their presence. Most of these people were know to her as either Kumogakure shinobi or former members of the Resistance. Those she didn't know about were analysed a little longer only to find out that they didn't seem to be the sort to be infiltrators or even bandits. It was possible they had the potential for proper chakra manipulation but simply were never found or recruited, or simply had refused the life of a shinobi when it had been offered. At least, that could have been the case for all but one person. A girl wearing a mask. From the bounds and leaps she had made, it became apparent she was not like the other unidentified chakra pools. She had clearly been trained by someone in an art not all that dissimilar from ninpou but without a headband to identify her as a member of a Village it was difficult to pinpoint who she was or what she was doing exactly. Only the mask made a slight allusion towards an ANBU-like allegiance but even that wasn't a guarantee these days.

The girl eventually decided against wearing the mask, revealing a face that portrayed her to be about Mizuki's age - somewhere in the early twenties. She still bore no headband but taking age into account, it was fairly possible this young woman was of an equal level of skill as herself. The average age for hitting the ranks of jounin was somewhere in the late teens, making this one potentially a greater danger than what was possibly perceived. Deciding it was better to intervene herself, Mizuki flickered away from the rooftops to blend in with the crowd and shadowed the unknown person all the way towards the hospital.

Of course. If there was one place vulnerable to infiltration or sabotage, it was a hospital. Just the thought that the young woman could pose a danger for so many civilians made her tense, but at the same time Mizuki didn't want to jump to conclusions right away. It was just as possible that she was seeking aide or visiting someone she knew in the area. A subtle and careful approach to the situation seemed the better advice. After hiding her own headband, Mizuki transformed her attire to look like that of a local doctor and stepped into the hospital after the young woman did. She'd move straight to the reception desk, casually asking her for the next list of patients as she subtly revealed her headband as a sign of identification to the person behind the desk. Promptly given a list, she'd thank the person and let her eyes roll over them before they'd scan the room to find the mysterious woman in question. Then, once she had spotted the girl, she'd move over to her and address her.

"You new? Please come with me. We'll quickly pick up some medicine before we get to it. What's your name?", Mizuki's tone was as calm yet determined as the impression her aura left around her; an unusual peace not too dissimilar to the wind-still sensation found within the eye of a storm. Like a driven medic who had not time to spare, she moved forward with the expectation of being followed without too much complaining, listening all the while to the name given - if such was the case - and whatever other information the person felt like sharing. She walked into a storage room and eyed the medicine as if she was looking to make preparations for the patients on the list, much in line with the plan she had laid bare just moments ago, but when she confirmed no one was around, her blue-green eyes rested on the young woman before her. Reflected within her eyes was no longer a hint of the 'medic' she was supposed to be, revealing the analytic perception of a high ranked shinobi all the more with a half hand seal and a subtle revelation of her Kumogakure headband.

"My name is Raiu Mizuki, jounin of Kumogakure. Considering the war-like state we are in, it is our duty to investigate unfamiliar people with chakra potential. I'm sorry I have to do this but please understand this is merely a formality, so kindly cooperate to the best of your abilities. Could you grant me your real identity and any of your affiliations if you have those?", the clear voice of the diplomat genuinely explained and asked, not having lost her harmonious demeanour in the slightest.

Chiaki was overcome by a doctor that went to the reception desk and was handed a patient list and busied herself with looking it over and going through a set of double doors. She shrugged and went to the front desk herself.

“Can I help you miss?” The receptionist looked her up and down, noting her clothes and Chiaki just smiled in response.

“I was wondering if there was any way that I could help out here, it seems like there was an attack. I am Guanyin Chiaki, a travelling medical ninja and want to lend myself to your services.” She dipped in a low bow, almost braining herself on the counter as she did so. Raising her head she smiled again at the receptionist.

“Oh, uhm. Miss Guanyin, are you of any relation to the Guanyin Lin that recently visited from here?” The receptionist asked, looking through the papers to see if there was anything that she could do.

“Probably a distant relative of mine?” She shrugged, “I mean, there is a lot of us running around all over, or so my mother tells me. But only a few that have my gifts.” She grinned.

The receptionist nodded and sent Chiaki over to the chairs where she waited for a bit of time before a woman, roughly her age, Oh the doctor from before, came over and addressed her with a bit of pleasantries. Chiaki bowed her head to the doctor, as it was their patients that they would be treating in the hospital. “Guanyin, Chiaki at your service ma’am.” She lifted her head and picked up the usual pace, it was a comfortable one for Chiaki, who took it in stride, almost outpacing the doctor once in a while she had to make sure not to step on the poor girl’s heels. She had enough to treat without a flat tire thrown into the mix.

Eyes scanned the room before resting on the patient list. She would need antiseptic, sutures, gauze… She started to reach for the gauze when she was interrupted by the woman staring straight at her, her hand paused mid-line to the gauze racking, a confused look on her face.

The sudden revelation of the fact that Mizuki was a jounin didn’t surprise Chiaki in the least, rather it solidified the severity of the wounded that they would be treating, but then she hesitated as the woman started to talk once more. Her eyes narrowed a bit in more confusion than she had before.

“I am Guanyin Chiaki, Medical ninja of the village hidden in the leaf. I should also tell you that I am assistant to the Hokage.” She relaxed her hands and put them behind her back. Using her left hand she started to weave hand seals and brought out a teal-senbon behind her. She would have to use it defensively to get out of whatever interrogation this was. And if she did hit Mizuki, she wouldn’t do any damage, quite the opposite. It was useful for blocking direct attacks. She just hoped that it did not come to that. Focusing, the foot long teal senbon shortened to a couple centimeters, which she kept behind her back with her left hand, extending her right hand, “Of course I’ll cooperate. But I need to know, are any of those patients on that list in critical condition before we continue?” She leveled a gaze at Mizuki that was full of that same determination that she was showing before. If there were lives at stake, if there were people that needed to be treated, she wouldn’t let this woman stand in her way, Jounin or not. The hand extending was to ensure that the other woman wouldn’t be able to weave hand-seals like her. Or at least she hoped she wasn’t on an even keel with Mizuki for that. Why had she been waylaid when she was trying to help? Why was she in a supply closet being interrogated?

These questions, if Mizuki was perceptive, would be plastered all over the untrained genin’s face.

The needles while active are solid and can interact as a weapon to block basic strikes but can be broken by a technique of equal rank.

At this rank the Blue needle upon piercing a target is absorbed into the victim and spreading its energy over a 1 foot radius area that is capable of filling / repairing minor wounds of up to three quarters of an inch, up to first degree tissue damage & and painful bruising at ¼ of a meter per second. While the Red needle, instead, kills cells within that area to inflict a painful blackened bruise like wound with a thin needle-stab at its center which becomes numb and lifeless.

A difficult case. That was what it was. The Guanyin on their own were a welcome name considering Mizuki's personal relations with them. Lin. Daremo. Amaya. All of them were Guanyin with whom she get along splendidly. So when she came to sense the young woman before her was just another member of their clan, Mizuki was of a mind to put her worries at ease. Until she mentioned to be a Konoha-nin and the personal assistant of the Hokage.

Tension between Kumogakure and just about every other Village was high thanks to the dead kage's former desires to conquer the world with his Jashinists, but that was exceptionally the case with Konoha ever since the Dragon had taken the seat of Hokage. As if the 'Sword Saint of Konoha' had not inflicted sufficient damage already by laying waste to Sunagakure, this new Hokage was currently on his road to achieve the same goals - the destruction of a Village. To think that man had called Mizuki out before about the 'monster' who was seated upon the Raikage's chair, yet was now out to slaughter the innocent the same way Mitsuo Sarutobi had done, was an inexplicable action to say the least. Konoha had supposedly assisted in the reconstruction of Sunagakure but Mizuki knew well the truth was different. She had first-hand experienced how the Dragon of Konoha, under the guise of an Iwa-headband, had been wrecking chaos and even abducted Kumogakure shinobi; one of her friends, to be more precise. When Mizuki then had tried to figure out where Myrddin was when next she met the Dragon on the field, the man had been cowardly enough to feign innocence and added insult to injury by hypocritically calling the diplomat out for firing at a friend of his. Little did he know, so she supposed, the Raiu were masters in precision strikes and as such Fuyuko had never been in any real danger. Not to mention Mizuki firing at at the Kiri-nin had been nothing more but a ruse to force Takao into action; he had deliberately taken a shot which would not have killed Fuyuko if Mizuki so desired. Unfortunately, the man had proven to have little else but the power of the dragons he represented. Of wisdom there was no sign to be seen; the man now on a warpath to hunt a dead kage in vengeance of something that had happened during the uncountable skirmishes of Inabayama. Not only forgetting his own transgressions of that period, but also forgetting the blood Konoha already had on its hands thanks to a similar madman delivering self-righteous justice.

And now his assistant stood before her. Using chakra to create something what took on the form of a senbon. Truly, Mizuki felt like groaning. For though the person before her didn't seem to have an exceptionally developed chakra pool, nor sported any indication of deception or ill-intent, hell, didn't even sport the semblance of knowing why she was finding herself in a situation as this, her close position with the current Hokage made her a valuable pawn which strategically should be wiped from the playing field.

Taking a slow, measured sigh, Mizuki took a moment for herself to think about what would be the best course of action in a situation as this. Takao was already on a rampage. Taking away his assistant wouldn't change that in the slightest, nor would it save any of the innocents and Suna refugees that had been duped by Hastur and would now suffer the consequences of his ambitious leadership. On the other hand, any medic worth their salt was a welcome sight who could make the difference - twice so if they held the medical prestige of the Guanyin. Without a Raikage to make concrete decisions or change the current 'diplomatic disregard' into a more favourable one, it was left to the higher in stations to make the decisions. Being a council member of Kumogakure who aimed to foster diplomatic relations and healthy rivalry above needless wars, Mizuki's decisions on this matter would be a gesture of good faith - even if that would most likely irk the general mindset of the other council members.

"While it is not prudent as the assistant of the Hokage to venture within Kaminari no Kuni unprotected in these current tides of war brought forward by the one you serve so closely, I can sense no ill intent within your words. If you truly intend to use that chakra senbon behind your back, let it be in benevolence of those who need it rather than those who are no stranger to the Guanyin. Or their techniques.", she'd give her reply, an indication she had sensed the use of chakra to create a chakra senbon and at the same time subtly hinting at the fact her clan was not an unfamiliar presence in her own life. Seeing the hand being offered, she'd rest her own hands around them and bow lightly in return.

"Yes, there are many wounded being brought in as of late. Civilians and Kumo-nin from the Land of Frost who clashed with Konoha, in between the daily routine. If you truly intend to assist in their restoration, do realise you may well be committing treason by doing so as we are currently your enemy. The other option is to walk away unharmed now and leave Kaminari no Kuni behind. It is not a decision you should take lightly, Guanyin-san."

With those words spoken, Mizuki moved to pick up the medicine she required for the listed patients, letting the young woman some time to think about her choice all the while. An unpopular choice by many of the strife-minded members of her society, but one she had abided by nonetheless for years as her own mentor had once taught her - the moment life was considered of lesser importance than the goals of the ambitious, they were close to losing their humanity and slipping into the semblance of monsters.

Chiaki

Chiaki

Chiaki was caught off guard by being caught by this woman using a technique that was apparently known to her. Her eyes narrowed before the woman grabbed her outstretched hand, usually shaken and bowed over it in an overly formal manner. It also proved that she wasn't making her own hand seals. Chiaki herself brought out the senbon sheepishly and stabbed it into her leg with a lackluster air about it. The chakra flowed within her, and finding nothing to cling to simply dissipated, "It might not be prudent, but I feel it necessary to treat the wounded that were caught in the crossfire between the two villages. This is but one of the villages that I am going to visit and help out, but it seems like, since I have been so easily found out, that I will have to better hide my identity when it comes to infiltrating the other villages." She opened her hands, holding them on either side of her head and sighed, "And I know when I am outmatched, but how did you know that I had made a senbon behind my back? Much less did anything behind it. I was sure that I had cloaked it from all senses."

She looked a bit lost, and clearly had not encountered anyone that was able to figure out her techniques so easily, or the fact that she was hiding them.

"You said something about not being a stranger to the Guanyin, which means... since you are from Kumogakure, that you must know either Guanyin Daremo or Guanyin Lin, both of them much stronger than I." There was no need for bravado here, it would do no good against a Jonin, best to be candid about all that she was doing here, and all that she was capable of. The fact that she was still alive was a show of good faith she knew, and best to use that opportunity to bridge the gap that had widened because of the spat between the Kages. Spat wasn't the right word for it, but it seemed that when anyone with a little bit of power got into a quarrel with someone of equal footing, they inevitably caused casulaties. Much like a couple fighting in the middle of a restaurant would ruin the night of not only anyone they were sitting with, but everyone in the restaurant as well, the hokage and the Raikage, when they pissed each other off, ruined the lives of the countless people around them. It was just on a much larger scale because they had jutsu that could warp the landscape around them, bend reality to their will. It was scary, to say the least.

"Who do you know with my blood lineage?"
she asked, rather boldly before Mizuki started to explain the situation to her.

She listened intently, grabbing some of the supplies she knew they would need and started adding them to a medical cart that was unoccupied in the closet. Nodding, she bit her bottom lip, the decision was hers hmm? Well she became a ninja for this reason, a shinobi for this reason. Best not to let her dream die here for political reasons.

"I am a medical kunoichi first." She stated, "I became a kunoichi because someone who was dear to me told me that I could help people with my gifts. I am going to do that or die trying." She nodded, "Life is more important than squabbles, more important than borders or boundaries. There are innocents that got caught in the wake of something as ugly as war, and I am going to right the wrongs committed by both sides. I am sure that there are some Konoha ninja here that were wounded by Kumogakure ninja, probably that abandoned their headbands in order to be treated here. If I don't know whether the patient is a ninja or an innocent bystander, and treat them like a human, then I am not going against my village. Tell me their name, not their rank if they have one, or their affiliation, and I will not be committing treason. But treasonous or not, life is precious." She leveled a look at Mizuki, "And I would stake my life, my reputation, my livelihood, and my health on that claim. Life is more precious than any earthly tie."

She started to gather some gauze, some regular sutures, some topical anesthetic, a three packages of sterile utensils, a box of gloves, and some other medical supplies and methodically put them into their respective drawers, almost mechanically, "I would treat Kumogakure ninja in Konoha if they were admitted, it's no different than treating them here." She said, mostly to reassure herself, but treason... treason was a big word. It carried weight, what if she was banned from the village. She set her jaw. If she was thrown out of the village, or killed because she was following her ninja way, then konoha had bigger problems than her helping a wounded person or two. She was there to help, and even if she broke some of the laws now, she was willing to accept the consequences.

Looking to the lights in the ceiling she sighed, wondering if she were doing the right thing and let the waves of uncertainty roll off of her in waves. Better to experience all the doubt here in the closet than out where the patients could sense it. It was better to be human behind closed doors rather than to a patient's face. She didn't know whether or not to cry, but then looked at Mizuki, swallowed her pride, swallowed her doubt, swallowed the lump that threatened to choke her and nodded, "I am Guanyin Chiaki, a Medical kunoichi." She nodded, "Let's get to work."

The will of fire burned away all of the doubt, all of the fear, all of the self-preservation that held her back. She was here to help people, and dammit, even if the Hokage himself stood in her way, she would treat the injured, the infirm, and the sick.

The first step to avoiding an unnecessary confrontation had been successful. The Guanyin disarmed their senbon, if such was even the right wording for an inoffensive technique. A matter of principle. Followed by a reply Mizuki could only describe as being a typical principle of the Guanyin. Always looking out for the wounded, no matter their affiliation. It reminded her of a certain person who had spoken about a similar ideology when Kirigakure and Kumogakure were still at odds during Sanosuke's reign. A cold war she had wished to break before her retirement into the mountains. Said reply would not end there, the look of confusion begging forward a natural question. How did she know?

"There is a technique called 'Kagura Shingan', which allows me to perceive minute fluctuations within someone's chakra. It has many uses. For instance, it allowed me to understand your chakra reserves are greater than that of civilians, indicating you've trained in its use. It also allowed me to identify it as chakra unfamiliar to me. Or rather, as someone who's well acquainted with present Kumo-nin, I knew you were not one of ours. However, I'm certain a Guanyin such as yourself can understand that the technique is useful beyond mere surveillance when you know it'd allow me to register any form of chakra impurity - genjutsu, chakra poisoning, lies."

The technique itself was not as widely known, other than in a couple of scriptures in the history of the Five Nations. The sort of precision Kagura Shingan brought forwards fell well in line with the chakra control the Raiu boasted, but its usefulness was one steeped within that of iryojutsu practitioners working on the highest levels. And who better than a Raiu with a Guanyin mentor to pick up such an old forgotten technique and apply it on different levels and purposes as she tried what she could to preserve what little remained of Kumogakure's true spirit?

"I know both of them, yes. Daremo-dono is a close friend of mine, while Lin is my mentor.", she said with a faint smile as fleeting memories of past days flickered before her mind's eye. Meeting Lin, their picnic at the waterfall with Alwen, the training and the pranks of Gora. On the complete opposite spectrum rested Daremo and his ANBU approach, revealing the darker side of the Guanyin's medical talents. Where Lin worked towards healing, Daremo was a master in necrosis, pathogens and tissue damage. Mizuki disliked his approach and avoided it when she could, but there was no denying the man's skill and knowledge, nor his efficiency in dealing with threats to which Mizuki's nature might be less suited. "I've seen both directions a Guanyin can take with their abilities. Yin and Yang; restoration and decay. Where Lin worked towards the preservation of life, Daremo knew how to tear it down with a gruesome mastery few could rival. As Lin was my mentor, I'm not keen on the Yin aspect of the Guanyin but only a fool would turn a blind eye to its potential. While I know them, it remains a question where your focus lies."

Taking supplies from the racks, she added them to the found cart and occasionally tapped the list to acknowledge she had everything needed for that patient before moving to the next one in the list. Most of the listed people were hardly in danger, merely requiring some medicine or having some bandages renewed. Simple chores, really, but which would likely take more time because the patients had something to complain or simply wanted some companionship. Only two people on the list would require a more delicate approach. One requiring a thorough analysis, the other a small surgery. As Mizuki continued to tick off the list of needed utensils, she listened to the young woman's introduction about herself.

Mizuki could recognise her own mentor in those words, in that approach. Deliberately seeking ignorance just so she could heal those in need. Life is an art worth cultivating, she'd say to herself, much in line with the train of thought of the young woman near her. Lin, too, stubbornly refused to deal with the Kirigakure shinobi the way Sanosuke expected to happen. She refused to maintain a cold war in favour of life and a possibly bright future. It was that which had attracted Mizuki towards the Guanyin, and that perception of the future which had set her into motion. Unfortunately, while Mizuki had hoped to continue the lessons Lin had taught her, the current state of Kumogakure showed how much exactly she had failed to shape Kumogakure in a similar direction.

"You sound very much like Lin. You'd rather stand alone and preserve life where you can than remain loyal to the strong but fail the wounded all the while. We might get along just fine, Chiaki-san. So when you are ready, please assist me with the following patients.", she'd say with a sparkle of amusement in her eyes, tapping the list of names. Then, when she had confirmed to have all of the materials, she moved towards the first patient in need of treatment - the one in need of surgery.

Chiaki

Chiaki

B-rank
"Kagura shingan" Chiaki tasted it on her lips, formed her tongue over it, bit it between her teeth and mulled it over. She had heard of it before, and as Mizuki continued, she nodded along. It sounded like a technique that was worth learning. Perhaps she could get this girl to teach her it when she was free. When the whole world was back right side up, when the whole world wasn't burning. When Takao was sane again. She gulped and brought her hands to a halt, bringing in a cloth that she was holding tight to her chest and hugged it close. Was she doing the right thing? Was she really going to go through with this? Nodding to herself she swallowed past the lump in her throat, tossed the cloth in the dirty bin, as she had contaminated that one with her presence alone, then continued to go on with her gathering of supplies. Gauze, antibiotics, antiseptics, pain reducers, inflamation reducers, salves, bandages, ace bandages, incontinence supplies, sutures, scalpels, the whole nine yards. She didn't quite know what they had in store for them, but if the stories were anything to go off of, she would have her hands full.

"It sounds like a supremely powerful jutsu. I hope that someday I can have something akin to it. It sounds like it would be useful to treat patients, see if anyone was a threat to them, and stop them before they harmed anyone else." She nodded, "Basically I would use it to protect others, but I can see it being used as a weapon too. To be able to tell if someone is lying just from their chakra network, to be able to see if someone means you ill, or to be able to catch an opponent completely unawares. It is a frightening prospect, and an almost godly jutsu. I can only hope that it doesn't get taught to the wrong person. To be honest, I am not sure whether it should stay with you, or whether to ask you to teach it to me. What happens if you pass it on to the wrong person." the last two sentences were more of mutterings as she went about her work as she was busy, rather than aimed at Mizuki in particular. More of musings of someone who was worried about powerful and terrifying jutsu tearing people apart.

There was uses for jutsu to stop people, to paralyze, to maim to keep people from harming again, but wanton destruction, area damage, collateral damage. Those were ignoble.

"Wait, the great Lin-raikage sama was your mentor!?" She looked genuinely stunned at that, wondering if she had heard right, "The kage that almost made peace with Kirigakure, the one that very nearly had peace in all of kumogakure, the one that neared a semblance of equality between outside ninja and citizens?" her eyes sparkled a bit, "She's an inspiration of mine!" She grinned a bit, then listened to the rest of what Mizuki had to say, something about the guanyin and the yin and yang of her own abilities. As Mizuki talked, she squeezed one hand, her dominant left hand and thought of her teal chakra running through it, the healing capabilities that she had. Then she looked at her right hand and cringed as Mizuki told about the horrors of Daremo's chakra. It was sickness and plague incarnate. She nodded, it was a gruesome thing to hear about, much less imagine. She wondered if Daremo had ever been bested in battle, wondered if he was truly the strongest medical ninja. Then she shook her head, No. Medical ninja didn't use their abilities to just tear down life, to make lifeless the things that they cherished.

She couldn't believe it. It wasn't true. Gulping she nodded once to herself, bracing for her question, and the eventual answer to it, "So who did you align with more? The teachings of Lin, or the raw power of Daremo? Which served Kumogakure more? Which was better for the well being of your people? I have only seen the leavings of Daremo and Hastur before him. It does not seem like Kumogakure has had a good run of Kages in the past two."

She looked towards Mizuki who was grabbing some pills, some specialty bandages, some splints. Perhaps they would be working more specialized cases than she had thought. A shiver ran down her spine, what did the girl have in store for her?

"I find myself wanting to be like Lin and I have... I have a question."
She gulped hard against her own indecision to ask, "Did - did Lin Sama have any apprehension at killing? And did she ever kill anyone? Did she have to do it in war?" This was starting to get personal, and Chiaki's eyes clouded over, a fine mist came over the sea that was her vision, and they glassed over with the ghosts of tears.

"I'm ah, I am ready." She would say, after attaining an answer to her questions, which were many. Mizuki was indeed a person worth knowing, perhaps worth learning from.

Mizuki nodded. Indeed, in the wrong hands, Kagura Shingan could do much devastation in a subtle way. It wouldn't be as impactful as a technique laying waste to the environment or one that destroyed people but to know 'Kagura Shingan' also offered the possibility to properly counter it, improve upon it or create variations not easily countered; the same principle as how a snake's venom could provide the antidote.

"Kagura Shingan is an A-rank technique, hence why it is a powerful. While chakra sensory is something that can be learned at lower ranks, the level of control and precision required to use Kagura Shingan at its full range and potential makes it a hard to master technique."

The Guanyin seemed to partially drift away in her own thoughts as she muttered the last few sentences. This sort of power was a terrifying thought, indeed. Mizuki had not been different when she had seen with what ease Lin had dispatched the bandits during the escort, and again how swiftly she could mold her chakra to demonstrate a variety of techniques. Where Mizuki once had been worried, she had grown into that power to a point where she no longer questioned its existence but how it was going to be put to use. She knew quite a few jounin with power she considered far above her own skills still, but never had she seen these people make use of those techniques where they could avoid it. A responsible use of power for the sake of the future generation; it was not a path shared by every other shinobi she had met. History alone, and mostly the destruction of other Villages, was all the proof they needed.

"It is not the power you should fear but its purpose.", Mizuki shared with the Guanyin. "Kagura Shingan is harmless if all you do is use it to detect chakra corruption within others or protect your Village against infiltration. But as you probably know, sometimes a festering wound can only heal once the pus is out. At those times, Kagura Shingan may become a controversy if it means analysing every of your known members to dig out the mole that's causing you harm."

And yet, sometimes controversy was the only way to correct something. As was the case when Mizuki had sown the seeds of the civil war reigning in Kumogakure. All that to take down Hastur Miyamoto. To save Kumogakure from the downwards spiral it had taken. To allow the future generation to breathe in healthy air and maintain a humane reasoning as they grew up, for under Hastur's influence the whole of Kumogakure would have ended up as zealots and Jashinists. But that was back then, not now, as the Resistance force had won the global fight and was now pushing out the pus which sickened Kumogakure. The Jashinists were fleeing to all directions. And once they would be gone and Takao's flames would be doused, the restoration of the Village could finally become a reality after years of negligence. Lin's dream could finally become truth then.

The Guanyin certainly didn't seem to mind that thought when she claimed Lin to be an inspiration of hers. While such bold statements were easily said, Mizuki couldn't deny that her words and actions tended to lean towards Lin's point of views. It was most nostalgic, knowing that she had once stood in the same position. Looking up to a Raikage who boldly talked about peace between the lands and equality between shinobi and civilians in a Village which had always maintained the tradition of martial superiority. She had wanted to be a diplomat back then, heralding Lin's diplomatic statements to the world. Unfortunately, many of her own dreams shattered throughout the years, pushing Mizuki into a different road. One of peace, yes, but also one of realism.

"Had you asked me that question years ago, I'd have said I would have followed Lin until the end of the world.", she began as the last memories of Lin and herself lingered. "But I've been through three wars and am currently looking at a future where Kumogakure will be destroyed by your kage. While I maintain Lin's path towards life and diplomacy, I can't say such a path can become reality without Daremo's. It is an unfortunate necessity to remove those who would see the future destroyed in a way that leaves little room for life and reformation. So I would say that I follow a path in between that of Lin and Daremo; one where Yin and Yang are in balance. A path, so I have found, to potentially be even harder to walk than either Yin or Yang individually."

Leaving the words to sink in, Mizuki guided the Guanyin towards their first patient. Listening all the while to what the young medic had as a question. A peculiar one, actually, as few people seemed interested in whether or not Lin, once having been a shinobi, had an aversion to killing. Most people who knew of her assumed every shinobi could kill. Those who knew her had never seen her end a single life.

"Yes, Lin-san has an aversion to killing. In all the time I've known her, she has yet to take a single life. She relies on great friends at her side for such dire situations.", she'd reply as her hand rested upon the doorknob which would lead to the first patient. An operation room, considering the heavy wounds they had suffered. When she then heard Chiaki to be ready, she opened the door and stepped inside. It was time to show Chiaki that Lin being her mentor was not just a matter of words.
